*wheninrome* and anyone else interested in photography-CC

Hey there,

My friend's kid got sick so I didn't take pictures on Sunday as planned, but here are a few from a birthday party I attended on Saturday for a little guy turning 1.  Any CC is welcome!

  • I knew someone would ask me that.  Unfortunately, I'm not on my home computer and won't be able to get these until late tonight, but I will try to do it then.  I was shooting with a 50mm/1.8 though.
  • I actually got the settings from smugmug - looks like you were shooting Aperture Priority at f/1.8, ISO 100.  Shutterspeed varied between 1/250 & 1/400(ish)

Overall, really great exposure.  No blown spots and only #5 is looking a tad underexposed (which was one of my biggest hurdles).

Biggest CC is to up that aperture 1 notch so that you can get both eyes tack sharp.  If you're focusing on one eye and the face is turned at all, the other eye will be slightly OOF.  f/1.8 has no room for error at all and depending how close you are to your subject, you'll only have about 1 inch depth of field (if you're 3 ft from the subject, you get .9in, 4 feet is 1.62 in).  #2 has both eyes sharp because you're facing him straight on.

I wish #3 didn't have his hand chopped and I really wish there was a different crop on #6 - I'd like to see both of his hands and his whole body instead of losing half of it.  looks like that's a pp crop and you had more room in camera, so I'd play with that one a little more.

#4 doesn't really do anything for me - my eye gets too distracted by the red blob in front to really see the shoes and then I'm wondering if he's under the car, on the other side, etc.  #5 is just a little too much dappled light - the shadows on the one side of his face are a little too harsh for me and you've got a floating hand since we can't see his right arm at all.

#3 is my fav, with #1,2, and 6 all close behind.  really great job!  i love the colors and your comps are really good - just watch those chopped hands/limbs!

Yep, need to up that a little, but since I'm just playing around/practicing, it shows me how well I'm doing on my focusing when I crank it all the way down.

  • love number 3....with better lighting ...the eyes would have really popped! I also love number 5 I like the focus of it. I am not so much knowledgeable about the technical side of photography...still learning. Loved what Purdue had to say.

how about some action shots? Those are always my faves....or maybe some that show the itneractions between the kids? Love the clors as well in the pics.

Here a few :)  The first two are SOOC, and on the last one, the white are blown out.  But hey, just learning!  I definitely need work on getting the eyes in focus and stop limb chopping.  Thanks again Purdue for the CC!
