Bloggers

Talk to me about blogs. I want to know everything about starting one, maintaining one, the best site to use, your own thoughts on them, everything.

There are so many things going on in my life that I want to start writing everything down so I dont forget anything. I cook every single night and try to make at least 2 new recipes a week so I would like to log that as well.

I have family all over the place, so I would like to be able to keep everyone up to date with our lives. Plus, I think it will add a new light into my life that you guys may not know about.

Re: Bloggers

  • See Lo's blog below.  I only got to 6 months, because things got hectic with working so it kind of just fizzled.  I am planning on finishing up to her 1st Birthday.

    I use blogspot.com, it's very user friendly.

  • I use blogspot like Christina, but I started off with the free template that they give you. I have a food/home blog - but I've been focusing more on recipes lately. I update twice a week, and I'm on other food sites to get more traffic like Tastespotting, Food Buzz, What's Cooking on the nest - basically it's all food porn for the eyes. lol Here's my blog.

Wordpress has a nicer template, and better options - and it's free as well. I might end up switching over to them. I started upgrading to free templates that I have found on various websites and now lately I've been doing all my own coding myself. I created my own header, changed the background and little things like the sidebar widgets. I'm teaching myself this foreign language by googling everything. It's easy to dissect, but can be a PITA if you add an extra link or so. I did C++ programming in college, so it's a language I'm somewhat familar with.

Here's a link to some some free or available templates for blogspot/wordpress:

    Shabby Blogs

Kevin & Amanda - great tutorials available to add elements to your blog

Butterflygirlms Rambles on - Beautiful scrapbooking-ish templates.

Leelou Blogs - Her designs are adorable.

One of my fave WC, Joelen, bloggers wrote a great article about food blogging.

Good luck, and let me know if you need any help with anything else!!

  • Krystal, I actually follow your blog on Whats Cooking? Your style of cooking is much more advanced than what I can do (or have time for) right now, but I still check in weekly for ideas and snag a few recipes here and there that I have time for.

With these kinds of blogs, do they instruct you as to how to add pictures and captions and all that? It seems like everyone has to spend tons of time putting these things together and adding things every week. Its obviously not too time consuming because people update theirs on a regular basis.

  • I started it last year with my 101 list and I blog about what I do for that and other things that happen in my life. The link is in my siggy. I use blogger and I really like it because it's really user friendly.

Awww, thanks! I do post simple and easy recipes, but sometimes I challenge myself with the harder stuff like Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon.

It's pretty straightforward - if you are blogging about a recipe. Add a picture where you want it. Then add the recipe, most food bloggers have a general consensus about listing where you got the recipe from - like from the author, book, website or fellow blog. Most eye-catching blogs to me, are ones that the author has a similar cooking style to me, great pictures, and a great story. I like hearing the author's story. I don't have a fancy camera, just a normal point and shoot, but it's all about the natural light. That's helps capture the best pictures to me. I don't always take the best pictures either, but I try and get the best one I can. Some bloggers update everyday, that's too time consuming for me. I'm focusing on Yelp-ing and blogging, it's like a 2nd PT-job!!! But to each their own, do what you want...it's your blog!

  • my blog's my job so I really have a different perspective.  I'm opting for a LOT of different things that you really don't need to be concerned about (like SEO and image size and more layout)

I use wordpress.org (not the .com) and host it on my own server giving me my web address.  I hate coding and it gives me a headache thinking about it because I need some advanced options I'm going to eventually get a custom blog.

I've used blogger/blogspot and wordpress, I like wordpress a lot more than i ever did with blogger.  There's a lot more templates out there and it has a wider format which allows for larger pictures.  Most pro-bloggers are on wordpress these days.

  • I like blogspot.com too. I will read your blog. I can't wait for you to start one!
  • I use blogger.  I have a hard time understanding the html coding and don't have time to learn/understand it, so mines pretty basic.  I picked a certain day to blog (and a blog post from somewhere suggested not posting on a weekend day b/c everyone posts on the weekend). Mines kinda a mix.  I originally put some work stuff in it, but mostly its about the Owly stuff I find and where you can get it.  I'm also including a few crafts and some travel pix.  I try to mix it up. Link in Siggy.
