weekend outing ideas

My husband finally has an entire weekend off to spend with me and our daughter.  Any ideas?  It's suppose to be anywhere between 65-75 degrees around, San Diego and LA.  He was telling me about some flower fields in Carlsbad, which sounds nice.  Anyone ever go there?  Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

Re: weekend outing ideas

  • Flower fields in Carlsbad are nice, I went last year. I just went to the Nixon library last weekend and loved it! They have beautiful rose gardens, the museum is great and they have the house he was born in and the Marine One helicopter. The arbourtum in Fullerton is nice, as well as The Huntington in Pasadena. Citrus Park in Riverside is really nice as well. Hope you find something nice to do!
  • I have been wanting to go to the Carlsbad flower fields and Nixon library for a long time now but we have not had a chance to do so. You could do a picnic lunch somewhere but it is going to be a little cooler this weekend like you said. If you are outdoorsy type of people and like hiking, Joshua Tree National Park is really pretty this time of year. The wild flowers are currently blooming.

  • All great suggestions. We may go strawberry picking at Tanaka Farm in Irvine this weekend.
  • I'm a huge fan of Balboa Park in San Diego. You can do a picnic there and the museums are great. Not expensive either.
  • Wow! You ladies have great ideas, just added them to my things to do list. I have been to the Flower Fields which are beautiful. From there you can hop over to the beach pretty quickly for a walk, but I know it will be cold. Hmm, I will try to think of something but they covered a lot.
  • Isn't there a miniature city for kids down in Irvine. Anyone know what I am thinking of? SIL took my nephew there and he loved it. You could do that and then possibly go over and pick some strawberries.

ETA: I'm not thinking at all, your LO is still too young to enjoy it. But if anyone else is interested, I just did a google search and it's called Pretend City.

  • I always love going to Riley's Farm up in Glen Oaks... they have apple picking, berry picking, wildflower picking etc... they dress in period costumes, and some nights they have plays and BBQs.  I'd highly recommend- I love it there! :)

  • You ladies are awesome!  All excellent ideas.  I'm writing them all down so I can make an effort to try all of them sometime. :)

  • We went to the flower fields a few weeks back - -it was really pretty. Afterwards, we went strawberry picking (it's about a block away from the flower fields). ?My 2 yr old had a blast there!

Not sure if you'd be interested, but this weekend is the LA Times Festival of Books at the UCLA Campus.?

  • We've taken both our kids to the science museum in Balboa park when they were around 6mths, they have a kids area for crawlers, they loved it. But it is kind of pricey to go just for that area, unless you can find a discount.  And they also liked the botanical gardens.
