I got a library card over the weekend, it's for Orange County libraries. In order to get it I had to show picture i.d. & proof of residency because my d.l. address is different from my permanent address - because we bought a house & moved. I didn't think this was that big of a deal. If my address on my d.l. had been the one I have them then I wouldn't have had to show them any other form of proof.
Well OC library cards are not valid for the Anaheim public libraries, those ones are HUGE, and I wanted to be able to use them as well. So I applied for a library card with Anaheim P.L. This time I just used the address on my d.l. figuring it would be easier (it's my parents address anyways). Not only does Anaheim want a picture i.d., even if your address is the same on your i.d. as the one you give them, they STILL want something that proves you live there. Jeez - is library book theft really that big of a problem? LOL.
On a side note - I can't believe the library is FREE. I know, you're all laughing @ me right now. It's just that... free computers, free internet, free books & dvd's, and free air conditioning on top of it?! Ted & I found our hang out for the Summer, hahaha.
Re: is book theft really this serious?
It's the same way here in NJ and when I lived in Chicago it was the same way too. They don't screw around
on the upside..having a library card has probably saved me atleast 10K in the last 10 years.
That's what I'm hoping for. I have a long list of books I want to read & I just can't buy them all. DH would kill me, lol. Plus books can be expensive if you only read them once. I only read most books once, and nothing makes me madder than buying a book & hating it. I do love buying books at Sam's Club. The series I am reading right now, each book averages out to be about $5 a book, except the newest one (at the time) was like $9. Not bad.
I haven't legally changed my name yet, so I'm waiting for that. It's about $20 to get a new license if you aren't actually up for renewal, so... I'm waiting so I can change my name & address at the same time.
I'm seriously going to the SS office to change my name on Friday! lol. I promised DH I would finally do that this week so I can change everything. I need to renew my passport (it expires in Dec.) before our cruise anyways so I may as well get on top of this stuff so I only have to do it once.
I think they're so crazy about proof of residency (same here) because the libraries are funded by local taxes, so you can only go to the libraries that your taxes support.
St. Louis is one of those weird "independent cities", I think Baltimore is like this too, where St. Louis City is not actually in St. Louis County. Since they are two separate entities residents cannot switch between them. This is really annoying when you live on the border or you work in one and live in the other.
I love the library, but I also love owning books, so many times I'll check it out at the library first and buy it later once I know it's good.
You are correct! Baltimore city is surround by Baltimore county. It's like a big circle around the city. And I work in Montgomery county which is an hour south, until May 3rd that is. Then I'll work in Baltimore county.
