It's official, I need a new job

Our office recently started using an internal instant messaging system. At our monthly meeting staff meeting just now, they informed us we are to put an away message EVERY.SINGLE.TIME we step away from our desk indicating where we are...fileroom, asking someone a question, bathroom! I don't need 34 people knowing that! I can't handle this level of micro-management. They are officially insane.

I'd just put a "brb" away message up and leave it at that.

We rely on AIM/iChat heavily and we're supposed to put up an away message if we're in a meeting or at lunch or something. I don't think I could survive without IMs (at work).

They want to know exactly where we are. You know, in case we we inadvertently waste 2 minutes or they need us stat *insert eyeroll*. This is also an office where if you don't answer your phone on the first try, they page you on the intercom. Heaven forbid someone go to the bathroom other than on their lunch break!

I feel your pain! I worked at a small company that did that. We had to send an IM for everything we did. If we were late to work - and by late i mean 1 minute or more....then we'd have to send a company wide email documenting the tardiness. 3 or more tardies in a quarter would exempt you from bonuses. The sad part is that I liked my position in that company -- but all the micro-managing rik-rak made it miserable.
