does this sound like a tick?

i was putting lotion on my legs this morning and felt a bump behind my knee. i look and its really dark and protruding from the skin, kind of like a skin tag. i can't pick it off, so i grab the tweezers. i barely squeeze it and it bursts (blood), but it doesn't hurt. then i wipe with a cotton ball and my skin hardly bleeds. it's like what burst was mostly on the outside of my skin. i didn't see anything left after cleaning with alcohol. its just odd that i didn't feel any itching or irritation before finding it.

i never actually saw a tick, unless the bump that burst was the actual tick bursting.

wwyd?

Re: does this sound like a tick?

  • definitely a tick.  If it was a decent sized tick then you have nothing to worry about except infection.  Keep an eye over the next few days.  It will probably get red and itchy but that's okay.  Just keep an eye out for it to get infected.

If you're just not sure give the dr. a call and he may want to take a look at it.  DH and I do a clean sweep after we get home from hiking or being anywhere with tall grasses.  We've found a ton of ticks on him over the years and definitely know what we're looking for haha.

  • I've heard that you need to make sure you got the head of the tick out of your skin.  I would just double-check that there isn't anything left in there.  And if not, just keep an eye on it for the next few days.  If a target rash develops, then call the doctor since that is a sign of a deer tick, which could carry Lyme's disease.
  • I agree; it was a tick. If you used tweezers and grabbed very close to the skin, you got the head. Keep an eye out for a rash, fevers, muscle or joint aches. Some doctors put you on antibiotics without the rash if you don't know how long it was on there.

  • i probably got it on Sunday when we were at DH's grandma's farm. we walked back to the pond and were outside a good bit. i was wearing yoga capri's but it could have crawled up i suppose. its just weird that i didn't notice until i felt it this morning.

i'll keep a look out for infection. thanks

  • Yeah, they always crawl up and seem to settle where the fabric tightens to your body (like bra lines, waist bands, tops of socks) Hopefully you got it all! I just found my first tick of the season yesterday too, I was hoping it would be later in the year before I came across any.
