What happened to your dog's leg?

Re: **Buckin**

  • She went running down the front steps and fell. ripped her CCL (Like our ACL). She can't walk on it.

She's 13 yo with bad arthritis and limited mobility in her hips...if it doesn't heal on its own some through confinement/limited mobility and pain meds we will be going to our regular vet (not the emergency vet) to look into surgery options but she may not be a candidate for surgery due to age and arthritis issues.

She's eating, using the bathroom, happy to see us etc...but I don't think she understands why I won't let her out of the laundryroom and why she has to be carried down the steps and not go off leash. She struggles to hop and gets tried and sore quickly.

Poor thing is confused. I feel absolutely horrid! so far no improvement. She's TRYING to put a little weight on it, but it still is very painful.

  • I posted about my dog last week.  She has also tore her (ACL) CCL.  She is younger (5ish) and only 15 lbs.  Our primary vet suggested surgery right off to bat.  I was a little skeptical so I did some calling around and we got a second option.  The 2nd vet said to do confinement for 4 weeks to see how see heals on her own.  She is already taking Dermaxx every other/ every 3rd day or so for her back (has a herniated disc that flairs up occasionally).  So its helping with the CCL discomfort as well.  Is your dog on glucosamine/MSM?  Our little Sami is use to being in her crate all day because that was the treatment we did for 10 weeks around Christmas, so she is use to it.  But I feel ya on the carrying up and down and walking on the leash.  She looks at me like, mama- I've got this...when I know she doesnt.  Sami does put her leg down occasionally, but not all the time, so we aren't out of the woods yet.  Hopefully your dog will be able to heal on her own.  At least there are lots of surgery options, though none are looking to be "cheap".  The main thing that I have read, is that once they tear one, they have an over 50% chance of tearing the other due to the amount of weight, the "good" leg is supporting.  Good luck- l know what you are going through and its NO FUN!
  • Yea, I'm worried.

Tedda is 65 lbs, chow/german shep. mix at 13 yo.

She has "toe-touching" quite a bit and trying to put a little weight on it. It's been three days. I don't see it as much improvement but maybe it is. I'm really hoping she can heal okay on her own. I worry about them putting her under etc at her age.

Bless her heart she does not understand. She's NEVER been in a crate and always had free range of the house. She doesn't move around a whole lot in her old age but they don't want her moving at all or getting a burst of energy.

We HAD to take her off the leash last night as she absolutely refuses to poop on a leash...but fortunately she didn't go far.

I can not pick her up physically because even though she's just 65 pounds her bulk and how she stiffens up makes her too awkward for me so DH has to do it. I can tell he's getting a little tired of it already. he let her hop the stairs by himself yesterday and I yelled at him.

But her looking at me over the babygate as she lays on her pile of pillows like she's being punished breaks my freakin' heart and I can't stand it.

I hope your doggie gets well soon!!
