Is your DH a picky eater?

My DH will not eat anything but meat, potatoes, corn, & peas.  And I still cannot believe that the man eats peas!  But, I eat just about anything...including peas.  This also makes us year-round grillers...even with 3 feet of snow on the ground we'll have our grill going!

So, I have the hardest time cooking dinners.  If something is different or if he can see green in anything (even if it's a spice), he won't eat it.  I tried serving him dinner by candlelight once...that was a flop!  He broke-out his lighter and used it to inspect his plate!

So...if you're hubby's picky...what do you do?  Does it make you want to scream?  Or are YOU the picky eater?  What does DH say to you?

So I guess this is a curiosity/ venting post...

PS

I did successfully introduce DH to lobster...of course he now loves lobster...like we can afford to eat that more than once or twice a year though!  Too bad shrimp "freak him out"...that would at least be affordable.

Re: Is your DH a picky eater?

  • My DH is also a picky eater - and also likes the food that your hubby does :) The only fruits he will eat are oranges (or similar) and pineapple. He hates veggies on pizza so we often do half with my toppings and half with his. Since we've lived on the East Coast he has gotten braver about seafood and likes crab cakes and will even eat shrimp now. I get frustrated that I have to leave out things when I cook - like I would love to make manicotti (sp?) with mushrooms and spinach, but he would definitely not eat that so plain cheese mixture it is! He cooks most of the time b/c my schedule sucks, so he can make what he likes.
  • No, I always joke that he would eat shiit if I served it to him. There are a total of two things he will not eat: salmon and potato salad. However he does have annoying rules. No carbs for dinner. So I can basically cook a piece of meat and a veggie and slap it on a plate. It definitely limits my options. He does not understand vegetarian meals. He thinks it's really strange and I am not a huge meat eater. Out of all veggies - peas!?! That's the only one I won't eat.

This is us exactly.  I could throw dog food on a plate on Monday and slave over a dinner for 3 hours on Tuesday and when I ask him how it is, I'll get the same answer for both: It's good.  Sunday-Thursday I make him the same thing: 4 ounces of steak and a filet of tilapia with either broccoli or asparagus.

  • Off the top of my head there are only 2 things dh wont eat, asparagus and mushrooms.  Other then that, he really doesn't care!  I'm very lucky because he loves to try new foods and since I'm the pickier of the two, I make whatever I want and he gladly eats it.  I'm not super picky so he's never said anything about it.
  • I could have wrote this post.  Dr. Lazy Palate eats corn, peas, meat and potatoes.  The basis for my blog is finding foods that we are both happy with.  He has gotten better.  I just treat him like a toddler and constantly introduce new foods to him.  I have found that he does not like a lot of stuff because his mom couldn't cook.  http://creatingnirvanatoday.blogspot.com/

  • You know, I can't think of a single thing he won't eat!!
  • FI was a VERY picky eater when we started dating, but not because HE didn't like the food, because either his mom told him he didn't like it or he had no idea what it was so he didn't try it.

Since dating me, he has tried everything.  I love food and really love good food and love to cook and try new things... he has finally seen the light.

However, he will literally eat anything I put in front of him, so it could be a bowl of slop or a 5 course gourmet meal and he'd eat either.

  • DH is not a picky eater. Our problem is our 'diets'. DH does the low-carb thing and I just try to watch calories and fat. It adds some difficulties in picking out recipes, but nothing like your situation!
  • My DH is somewhat picky... He doesn't like seafood, at all. ever. And I'm mostly vegetarian, seafood being the only meat/animal things that I eat on occasion (mostly when we go out to eat). That is our main issue because DH loves to cook, as do I, but most of his favorite recipes involve meat. I hate making 2 different meals for only 2 people, but it's what we do most of the time.

My husband is NOT a picky eater.  He's from Taiwan & eats really bizarre (IMO) food-chicken feet, tendons, etc.

With that being said, I am apparently a picky eater.  I'm kinda like your DH--grew up in the midwest & I am totally a steak & potatoes kind of gal!!  DH is constantly saying "try this" or "just take a small bite."  Freaking leave me alone, if I want to try it trust me, I'll gladly bring my fork & knife over to your plate & cut myself a bite!  Yes, some things I like, others I hate & will not ever try them again.

    This.

My DH will eat anything... except mixing fruit with anything other than breakfast food freaks him out.  And he is not a fan of peanut butter with banana.  Likes peanut butter, likes banana... but not together.

Drives me nuts though when I spend a LOT of time on a meal and I get the same "it's good!" that I get when I do 10-minute frozen bag-o-food dinners.  But, at least he eats whatever I give him :-)

  • i think i am the picky one, but i am WAY better then when we first started to date.

    my hubby will eat anything!

I can't even begin to explain the rage that builds inside of me when I hear a parent TELL their kid not to eat something because they don't like it. My parents have some friends who do this to their daughter. She's 17 and only eats crap. Seriously. She won't eat vegetables unless they're slathered in ranch dressing because her parents TOLD her that's the only way she would like them. I think kids should be allowed & encouraged to try all foods & decide what they like for themselves. That's how I grew up & I'll eat almost anything, & I will try almost anything. There are certain things I draw the line at - oysters, brains, liver, and stuff like that. I can't get beyond the fact that oysters look like giant boogers. lol.

I'm lucky because my husband will eat just about anything, as long as none of the different things on the plate are touching. hahaha. He likes his food separate & does not mix stuff together. I often joke that I'm going to get him one of those toddler plates with the divided sections.

I can't think of anything he won't eat. There are things he doesn't like to eat but he will if he has to, like chicken on the bone. He doesn't like having the same thing over & over, like if I buy asparagus he will eat it & like it, but he doesn't want to have it all week.

eta: I love peas! They're one of my favorite veggies.

  • Picky is an under statement.  He has to be "in the mood" to eat something.  H won't eat anything on a bone.  He won't eat pork unless it's bacon.  He won't eat steak unless its fillet mignon.  He won't eat fish unless it resembles a fish stick.  Basically my options are chicken and chicken...BUT I have to trim, trim and trim some more.  If he gets a bit of fat it's all over.  I waste more chicken because I have to make sure everything is gone...and this includes boneless skinless boobies which usually go from c cups to a cups by the time I'm done hacking them.  He'll eat potato but prefers rice.  He used to love sweet potato and now he's not even like them.  He doesn't eat spaghetti but will eat bow ties and no sauce, butter only.  He makes me want to poke my eyes out with a butter knife.   Oh did I mention his food can't touch?

I'm not very picky.  There are def things I don't like...turkey, ham, tomatoes.  I am willing to try most anything once provided theirs no shrimp involved (allergies).

  • I'm an insanely picky eater.  Although my taste in food has changed a lot over the years I still consider myself picky.  One thing I can tell you all who have picky husbands, don't bug them repeatedly to try something, especially in public.  It can be really humiliating.

A few things that have helped me over the years was to actually get in the kitchen and experiment myself.  I tend to cook the things I don't like very well.  My family laughs at me because of it.  Another thing is when we'd go out, even to a more exotic joint like sushi (go ahead, laugh), we'd always make sure there was something normal on the menu like teriyaki.  As time went on I'd start to pick at everyone's sushi and now don't even order teriyaki.

It sounds childish, I know.  But all of those things really did help.

  • DH is a very picky eater!  I think this is mainly because his mother didn't introduce him to many foods when he was growing up.  If he could live off pepperoni pizza alone he would!  I guess I should say was a picky eater.  Thankfully since we started dating he has been willing to try lots of different foods he would never even look at in the past...often only after a lot of sweet talking from me :) I will eat pretty much anything or at least try it.  When I cook I just make what I want and he can take it or leave it.  Most of the time he says he'll pass and cook for himself...but the next thing I know he is eating and saying how he likes it.

    Good luck!

edit: I forgot.  Normally food isn't much of an issue throughout the week b/c DH is on so many different diets for his bodybuilding - bulking one month, leaning out the next, it always seems to change.  We both fend for ourselves the majority of the time.

Are we married to the same guy?  DH could live off of pepperoni pizza as well.
