XP: Cap District: Carpets & Home Inspector

I put this on the bump page too, but thought I'd check here as well.  We about to put an offer on a house.  It needs new carpets and I want to get an estimate.  Does anyone have recommendations on where I should look?

Also, does anyone know of a good Home Inspector?  I know they are all busy right now trying to get things done before the tax credit runs out, so I'd like to have a couple of names just in case.

Re: XP: Cap District: Carpets & Home Inspector

  • We used Peter Shaming for our home inspection, and I'd recommend him.  His contact info is here:

We'd have gladly paid him to do a radon inspection too, but he told us we shouldn't spend the money, and proceeded to explain to us exactly where in the cap region radon is a concern, where it's not, and why, from a geological perspective.  He could've just let us pay for the test!

We haven't done carpet yet, so no help there.

  • We used Rich Dowd with WIN Home Inspection and was very happy with everything.  He went through the house with us, answered all questions, and emailed us a detailed and color copy of the home inspection that night for us to look over.

We did get the radon test because I wanted to be sure.  He did tell us that he didn't think we needed the pest inspection, so we skipped that.

  • No idea on carpets, but we just used Greg Sanchez for our inspector. He was very thorough and easy to schedule with. Our seller was at the inspection and said "wow, he went over a lot more stuff than our inspector did!" He did our radon test also, because we are paranoid (even though we were in a low-risk zone, for Albany)
