Visiting NYC alone?
My best friend and I live in different states, but really want to see the SATC movie together. We decided to meet in New York and do a totally cheesy SATC weekend.
She has no vacation time left, so she will meet me on Friday night and leave on Sunday afternoon. Her husband's family also lives there, so she's spent plenty of time in the city.
However, I've never been to NYC, and would hate to only have a day and a half. I would like to fly in on Thursday night to have all day on Friday to sight see.
On Saturday, she and I will do breakfast, some shopping, the SATC bus tour, dinner (at a restauant in the SATC series - please let me know if you have any ideas!), and then see the movie. So on the day by myself, I would want to do more traditional touristy things. I really want to do the Museum of Natural History.
Is this crazy to do it alone in a very unfamiliar city? Is it possible to stay near the museum and be able to fill an entire day without much traveling around? I'm completely comfortable catching a cab, but really don't want to navigate the subway system alone or take long walks on my own. I'm fairly directionally challenged.
If my one definite place to visit is the Museum of Natural History, can you suggest an itinerary for me to fill up one full day but stay in relatively the same area?
Also, this is a budget trip. On the night that I'm by myself, I want to be as cheap as possible while staying somewhere safe. Any recommendations? If I do Priceline, in which area would you bid, and what is a reasonable price range?

First of all, Hotwire.com has great last minute deals on hotels and they are guaranteed by star rating and location! We did it for Boston and it was great, got a $999/night room for $200!
Also, www.hopstop.com is you best friend. If you know addresses it is basically mapquest for NYC subways. It will help you because the subway is very easy and cheap!
It is definitely doable on your own! It is a very safe city with lots to do.
If it is a nice day, I'd go to Central Park after the museum. It is a surprisingly diverse park with lots to see. You could walk across the park to the Metropolitan Museum.
And yes, Hopstop can be your best friend. Even as someone who lives in NYC, I use it all the time.
Just a thought because you said you're on a budget -- you can see a lot of those sites by walking through the West Village (I see the tour bus stopped on 7th Avenue all the time at Pleasure Chest, and it is very easy to get to Magnolia Bakery, to walk by Carrie's stoop, to see where Miranda got married, etc. from there). From there it isn't hard to walk to Meatpacking/Soho etc.
