Sad Day to Call AZ My Home

I don't know how aware most of you are about this, but Arizona just passed a law which essentially legalizes racial profiling.  This law states that police officers can stop any person for any reason and ask them for proof of being in our state legally and arrest them if they cannot provide documents on the spot.  OK, it really states "suspects a person for being here illegally" but we are talking about a state where you can get a DUI because a police officer "suspects" you are impaired regardless of blood alchohol level.  Now don't get me wrong, there is a HUGE issue with illegal immigration in this state, but I don't think that harassing my grandma when she comes to town is going to fix it.  I am just bummed out to see this happen.

Re: Sad Day to Call AZ My Home

  • I am seriously sickened by this.
  • Ugh....I hate when things like this happen and allow for parts of the country to take ten steps back in progress.
  • That's really depressing.  Like Karrey said, taking steps back.

  • I feel like the rest of the country gets a really skewed view of the residents of border states because of ridiculousness like this. I understand that illegal immigration is a stress on resources, but stories like these make people think that everyone who lives in Texas or Arizona is an angry racist freak shows who sit on the border with shot guns . . . but when I speak to my friends is border states they tell me most of people they know are against crazy sh*t like this.
  • I've read that other states will probably follow AZ's example now that it passed.  Pretty sad if you ask me.  I agree that illegal immigration is a problem, but this does not sound like the right solution.  Did anyone in the AZ legislature ever see "Children of Men"??

VA is similar with the DUI thing.  It's unconstitutional, but MADD has too much power for anyone to do anything about it.  Not that I condone drunk driving.

I can just about assure you that NO ONE in the AZ legislature has read or watched anything of any cultural signifigance, or anything that would make one think for that matter.

  • That's just terrible!  I am sorry for you!
  • WTF?  Seriously?

Wow . . . the whole freaking country is just depressing . . . I understand having issues with illegal immigration, but racial profiling just makes me sick.  No matter someones immigration status, our constitution states that we have "inalienable rights."
