Who's In Arizona?

So... it's pretty set that I am going to be moving AZ (probably Phoenix) instead of Henderson, NV now in September!  So... who's all out there??  Anything  I should know before making the move?  I have housing being lined up so I don't have to worry about that for now and of course already have a job.  But fun stuff to do, areas you like, etc?

Re: Who's In Arizona?

  • NV?  I thought you were going to Wisconsin?  Now AZ?  You're confusing me! haha

If you do move to AZ I'm on the visit list...I've always wanted to go there.

  • I know Jamie (Simple Mistaken) is moving to AZ, but I don't know where exactly. Ted has a cousin who lives in Phoenix... I know that doesn't help you out a whole lot, but she seems to like it there - she moved there from So Cal / OC area. That being said, Ted & I have been talking about visiting his cousin, so when we do I will let you know so we can see you also! :)
  • I was going to say the political environment in AZ is scary, but then I remembered that I think you're not on my side politically so I guess that means it will be great for you! haha Stick out tongue

So why AZ?  I'm out of the loop I guess, because I didn't realize that you were moving anywhere!

  • I lived there for 8 years.  I moved around a lot in my earlier years there(college/roommate years).  I lived in Mesa, Tempe, and Scottsdale.  You will see once you have lived there for a bit that all of these, combined with Phoenix, are like one huge city.

Chandler and Scottsdale by far have the best malls and shopping, but Tempe has the entertainment and nightlife!  Mill Avenue is full of shops, bars, restaurants, and entertainment.  It is artsy too.  I bartended my way through school at a place called Suite 301 on that strip for 4 years.

Scottsdale definitely has a great nightlife too, but it is on a different scale and a totally different feel to it.

I have a sister and still some of my best friends that live there and go often!  My husband actually took me back there when he proposed bc that is where we met.  So, AZ is very special to me! =)

I am going to Wisconsin for camp, but that's only for the summer.  After that, gotta go somewhere else!

As for why Phoenix... I'll have to keep that to myself for a bit.  Unless you can bribe Marci to reveal all my secrets... but if you do that, I'll reveal the blackmail pictures.  Muahahahaha!!!  :)

Thank you!  This is actually a huge help.  I was looking into Chandler, Tempe, and Mesa mostly.  The whole south eastern part, really.  I will have to check out these places!  And I love that it's artsy!  That's right up my alley.  :)

  • ::waves:: I am!! I am!!.... But you already knew that :)

No one will get the 411 from me... What happened in Mexico needs to stay there! (or on a disk hidden away for us to laugh at in 30 years)

Yeah except you're leaving before I get there!  *tear*  Don't worry, I'll be a good replacement daughter for your Mom.  :)

Out of those three, I think Chandler is the prettiest and cleanest but more expensive.  You will see that all of AZ is pretty clean though.

Tempe is somewhat of a college town (ASU is there near Mill Ave.), so Mesa is a good alternative that is near by and lower priced.  Not a lot going on there but a decent place to live.  Then there is Gilbert, but further out.

Scottsdale is obviously the most expensive and I always stayed out of the Phoenix/Glendale area at all costs!  Crime is much higher there and some other stuff that just wasn't for me.  If I had to be near Phoenix, I would go the Cave Creek route. If you don't mind a little bit of crazy college kids near the campus, Tempe is a great place!  My favorite. =)

    Where will you be working?

  • My DH is from Tempe, also lived in Chandler and Mesa.  He just moved out here (to Cincinnati) 3 yrs ago and his family still lives out there.   If you have any questions about the area I'm sure he'd be able to answer them.
    Visit The Nest!
  • I lived there for 6 years but in Tucson(went to University of Arizona).  But Ive been to Phoenix lots of times!.  Mikes brother and wife live in Gilbert so we go a few times a year.  If you have any specific questions about the area, I could ask too.

I agree with Rachel about the suburbs she recommended. Mill Ave is really nice, and Scottsdale too.  I love Arizona!!  (Im so jealous you get to moce there, since I have been begging Mike to move to Phx so we can be near some family and buy a house. He wants to hold out here a couple more years here).

Even if you start out renting, you will not believe how much cheaper it is.  It is so affordable compared to southern california.

Photography still.  One of the big perks of my job is that I can do it anywhere.  I wanted to move to someplace more affordable so that my income actually means something.  In SoCal I'm almost completely dependent on Rocky even though I make decent money.  In AZ I think it'll go further, and since it's still close to SoCal I can keep working here and not lose my current contacts.  A 5 hour drive ain't bad and it gives me an excuse to go see friends in SoCal.

I'm also going to be getting a settlement for my shoulder soon that will help out a lot.  :)  I'm hoping it's enough to put at least 20% on a house out there eventually.

Can you tell I've really thought about this a lot lately?  :)

I knew you were out there for college!  :)  And actually Amanda talking about Arizona all the time was another reason I decided to include it on the list of places I want to live.  I want to go to the gem show!

  • I think Barb was from there.  Um, I visited Scottsdale once, downtown was cute!...and went to the superbowl in AZ.  lol, that's all i got!
  • I went to school in AZ for myfreshman year at NAU, in Flagstaff. I love AZ, were actually trying to plan a trip there right now. I still have tons of friends that live there. I 2nd everything Rachel posted. So excited for you, you're gonna love it. And let me know when your ready to make a trip up to Flag, which you will have to do as an AZ resident, and I'll tell ya where to go in the town. It's a really neat place, right up your ally.

Oh yeah, duh...I forgot about Amanda!  I agree with her though.  Great decision.  Maybe I'll see you there in a few years!:)

  • No input on AZ, but I just wanted to say that I'm happy for you.  It sounds like you have a lot of positive excitement on the horizon!
