Hello there! I'm active on my local board and was hoping I could reach out to some fellow nesties for advice. ![]()
My parents and siblings moved to Round Rock a few years ago. My Huz and I are going to visit this wednesday for a week and we're staying at my parents' house. We've gone to visit before, but we pretty much just hung out with the fam and went to Hobby Lobby, HEB, Rudy's, and Cracker Barrel.
We'd really love to go hang out in Austin for a few days. We've driven through downtown, and passed by the capital building, but haven't really gotten to check anything out. Any suggestions on where to go? We're not big drinkers, we love to eat, and we love live music but not super rowdy crowds, or tons of bonehead teenagers. Are the bats hanging out there? I think Huz would get a kick out of seeing them.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated! TIA!!!
Re: suggestions for a nor-cal nestie? =)
I'd say take a good afternoon and spend some time on South Congress! Especially on Thursday afternoon/evening. Find some parking around Congress and Annie or so, and just walk up the drag - go get some dinner at either Homeslice or Guero's - and you will have a blast! Guero's has live music around. I went to Perla's oyster bar this past weekend and the atmosphere was awesome.. you'll see a bunch of trailers across the street - if you want some dessert, go to the Cupcake trailer and get one of those bad boys.
That area is super entertaining - definitely make a stop there! Other than that.. the 2nd street district (around 2nd and Nueces) has some good restaurants and wine bars. Like BOB mentioned, 4th street is a pretty good atmosphere as well. There's coffee shops, bars, tapas, music.. not a bad one to check out.
Are you into cycling or running or anything? The bike/sporting culture is pretty good around here. I can give you more info on that, too. The Lady Bird Lake is a good place to spend some time, we've got an awesome trail and you can rent kayaks and stuff.
Please go to better places than Cracker Barrel! Eek! At least Chuy's is next door and has quite the tasty Mexican Martini!
I believe that the bats are just now getting to this area. I think there is a bat hotline you can call and it will tell you what time you can see the bats.
Like pp said, South Congress is a pretty cool area to stroll. Be sure to hit up all the shops and some of the great food in the area.
I second Chuy's, you can't have an Austin visit without Chuys! The queso is delicious.
The Zilker Botanical gardens are also a nice area to visit. They were filled with beautiful blooms a week ago.
You can also check out austin360.com for what is going on in town when you are here.
Have fun, it is a great place! Please, please do something more exciting than Cracker Barrel and HEB.

I'm originally from CA (orange co) and we always take our OOTers to south congress - love it! for a nicer dinner, check out south congress cafe, very yum.
we took my parents on a bat boat tour. it was just ok, but it was cheap and you can bring a picnic/beverages.

have fun!
thought of something else:
the domain is an outdoor shopping center close to RR and has some fun restaurants with good HHs. jasper's if you want "upscale" BBQ and kona grill if you like sushi/seafood. both have outdoor patios.
OMG, those ice cream cupcakes in your siggy look amazing.
I'd just stick to the South Congress area during the day (between Oltorf and Riverside). Hit up Barton Springs Pool after lunch. Downtown (2nd-4th Street-ish) at night. Done and done.
