BR: thanks Lori W

for talking about the Just Between Friends sales - I just went to my local one today and got lots of great stuff.

Some of my fav finds:

Almost new Robeez sandals $3

a leapfrog music table $10.  I soooo want to just use natural/wood toys but it's hard not to fall prey to the musical/noisy plastic crap because I know he will love it :)  I cleaned it up when we got home and helped him "play" with it and yep, he loved it.

lots of gap jeans/pants/hoodies for $3 and a couple of Janie and Jack and Gyboree whole outfits for $10.

But.... it was cut throat in there!  I was looking at a pair of Carhart overalls(NMS but my grandpa would LOVE to see him in Carhart) I think my hand was still resting on it as I looked for the price and POOF this scary woman snatched them away.  EEK.  Lesson learned - put thing in your bag right away and weed them out later.

I still managed to spend $90 - but I got a lot of clothes in the 9+ mo sizes so he will be set for a while.

Some stuff there was really overpriced though.  I haven't been shopping for kids' stuff for long but I really doubt Old Navy Jeans should be priced $7 used, or cotton carters pants for $5...

On a funny note, DH told my MIL where Jack and I went today (he was excited about my finds and said SIL should go to their local one to see if she can find a double stroller) and she was almost horrified - said she would send us more clothes if we didnt't have the money.  Hmmmm, she totally misses the point....

Re: BR: thanks Lori W

  • ditto!

b/c of Lori we were able to get almost all of A's stuff from the JBF sales... i went once before she was born during their "fall" sale last Aug... we got her eurobath there, all her clothes, the boppy, some head bands, etc.  for her clothes i got lots of nb, 0-3, and 3-6 sizes with some 6-9 as well.... big money saver was the set of dr brown's bottles that we got there - those things are $$$

i recently went to the spring sale and well.... she is still in her 0-3 months clothes LOL so i just picked up a few 3-6 months items that i just couldn't resist and but i was mainly there so i could buy a bunch of different brands of bottles to see if she liked one over the other... getting them for about $1 a piece is much better when you have to try every brand out there LOL

i have to say... i know a lot of big toys that are popular go at the presales...and i'm sure some really cute clothes do too but to be honest i've gotten some really great stuff just going on the last day to the 50% off sale... all of her clothes have been about $1 a piece, some less... with the most expensive item about $3-4... i've heard it can be slightly different with the boys clothing, esp as you go up to the bigger sizes b/c boys rough up their clothes more than little girls do but if you don't live too far from the sales it's worth while to go on that last day to get the extra savings

oh and in regards to your MIL's comment, my parents were the same way... when i told them how i got all of her clothes on consignment they were like "you're not that poor, you can afford to buy her new clothes... you can get some really good prices when there are sales.  no need to go buying her stuff like that in the future...ok?" LOL  but, after they came to visit and saw the quality of the items i got for her (they were all like new - some even w/tags), i think they were more ok with it :)

  • You're so welcome!  Glad you liked it.  Whoa to that scary lady...I've never witnessed that here in Tulsa (JBF was started here by a local mom...she's made big $$$ by franchising it).

You're right about the pricing...I just don't look at anything over $5.  I saw this one cute outfit...it was obviously used...priced for $40.  WTF?

I agree with Jaime...I've gotten most things on the last day for 50% off.  Most of Libby's clothes are $3 or less.  I also got a lot of our nursery gear there.  And some toys...like you, I don't want everything Libby has to be plastic, take batteries and light up!  But I found a cute plush hippo that says colors in Spanish and English when you squeeze it's various limbs and ears...his belly plays "de colores"...for $1!  Brand new too!  And like Jaime I've bought all sorts of bottles to try with Libby...she hates them ALL!  So I am glad we didn't spend a fortune figuring that out.

They have a few JBFs here since it started here but I've only been to the one Tulsa.  I wish they'd have more "crunchy" items but the mamas here aren't into it...no luck at finding any sort of organic clothing or toys or baby wraps or Ergos or anything like that.  But for "mainstream" stuff and some higher end clothing like Gymboree, Gap, etc. I like to get that stuff for le$$ at JBF.

There's another one, similar to JBF called Rhea Lana...there was an expo here last weekend but I didn't go.  Maybe they have them near you too?

  • I didn't see much priced under $2, but I expect this area to be a little more pricey since everything else is.  I thought the reasonable prices there were $3-$5 for single items and $10ish for complete outfits (usually 3 pieces - shirt, pants, socks/hat/jacket) which is a lot better than the few actual consignment stores I have been in.  It's about 35 mins from me so I'm not sure I should really go back on Sunday for 1/2 price.  Hmmmmm

I wasn't in the market for gear and it looks like all that stuff was getting snatched up quickly - so I'm not sure how you could find anything after the "first time mom & military presale."  Now that I know what to expect I think I will go back in the Fall to look for some specific items.  For example I saw some people carrying around and paying for hiking (frame) baby carriers and we really want one of those.

Even in baby clothes there was WAY more girl than boy stuff.  I am kind of picky style wise, I like his clothes to be more like real clothes (polos, khakis, jeans) and if he stays tall like he is now the onesie type outfits don't work well so I mostly look for t-shirt/polo/button downs.  It's funny after I got home and looked at my reciept I noticed about 1/2 the stuff I bought, in various sizes, were all from the same consignor number, haha I guess we have the same taste.

Lori - I'm not sure how you could really seek out organic stuff in terms of clothing, I'm not patient enough to look through them that well - but it would be nice to find.  I did hear lots of women talking about the cloth diapers for sale and I saw lots of mobys in people's bags.  I wasn't too on top of looking through the toys but I saw some other ladies with neat stuff (blocks, those maze things with the beads).

Jaime - that is totally how MIL acted, not sure why people care so much, yay for saving money on clothes that are not worn very long!  Her and her friends send us really extravagant baby stuff - most of it not practical (I'm sure a Burberry jogging suit would really go over well at daycare!).  Even if I showed her the stuff I'm not sure I could win her over.  I wish I could though because SIL really could save money buying a used double stroller plus I can't really see her using it that much, her 1.5 year old hates the stroller right now.  I can't believe A is still in 0-3, it's crazy how babies can vary so much.  Jack was only 12.5lb on Monday and I have had already had to put away the 3mo Carters stuff and most 3-6 Gap stuff - he's just long so things fit him strange.

  • yeah there wasn't much that was under $2 at reg. price but once you hit 50% off day there's lots :) i like the more modern stuff too and at the last sale i got a onesie and pair of osh kosh jeans for her for $1.50 :) even though i didn't love the onesie (it was just ok), just $1.50 for the jeans was a steal!

yeah i know sizes vary a ton between brand but she's still wearing her 0-3 carter's which i think is crazy b/c their size chart says up to 12 lbs or something like that :) that's ok though b/c we are getting more use out of things. even her orange edge GMD prefolds we used for 12 wks before sizing up!

i'm glad you were able to get a lot of great stuff... i agree there's no reason to pay more for it when you can get it gently used for so much less! esp when they often can only wear each item a few times before they out grow them

Lori - thanks for the info on rhea lana! they have their first event in TX in the fall so i might have to check it out :) it's a hike from where we live (about 45-50 min) but brent's cousins live up there so maybe it'll be a good excuse for me to go visit them since we've only seen them once since moving to TX 3 yrs ago! :)
