Not a great start to a monday

So Pauls mom called him at 6 this morning saying that there was a message on their home machine saying that his account had been hacked into! They wiped out his checking and his saving was set up as overdraft protection and wiped that out too!

Anyone have any experience with this or know the laws about it?

Re: Not a great start to a monday

  • I don't have any real experience with it but the bank should cover it. I'd start there. And he might need to file a police report, but I'm not sure on that.
  • Hmmm sounds a bit fishy to me. I would be sure to go to the bank and deal directly with them- don't give any info. over the phone.

I agree with this. He should go straight to the bank, or have him check his balance online or over the phone first thing. If his money is gone, the bank should cover it. If not, then yay! I hope everything works out! That really would be a crappy way to start the week!

  • he is at the bank now filing a police report. He did look at the bank online and there were a bunch of charges in Chino Hills, CA...wherever the hell that is!!

  • That sucks! Yes, good for the police report filing. And the bank's fraud dept should be able to find out what happened, and hopefully track the loser down. I'm almost certain he'll get his money back! But from what I remember working at a bank, it can take a while, so try to be patient (as in 4-6 weeks, possibly more)
  • I had this happen to me once.  I filed a police report and got all my money back.  It took some time, but they did refund everything.

Sorry he has to go through this...it's a real pain.

  • That sucks!  I hope everything can get sorted out quickly and smoothly.  I am getting more and more wary of using my debit card now between hearing about people's numbers being lifted from restaurants/store purchases to having a restaurant hold more money than my tab was worth.  It's really frustrating and making me consider going to mostly cash.
  • Oh that really sucks...I would talk to the bank. They surely have dealt with this before. I am so sorry Paul is going through this! :(
  • Chino Hills is right by where I work.  I swear it wasn't me!!

Like everyone else has said, the bank will give him the money back.  It's just a lot of paperwork but be patient and it'll all work out.

It's so creepy when these things happen.

  • Aw! This sucks! This happened to me but it was only a few dollars. They gave it back to me within a few days.
  • He will get all of his money back....yay!! So apparently there was a big article in the paper on saturday talking about if you ran a tab at O'shea (a bar around here) that it is possible that your card info was sold to ppl....sooo apparently thats what happened! Bastards! I knew it wasn't you Nami! lol

This exatly. A bank would never call and leave a message like that. They would call and say this is Loss Prevention or something of that sorts, please call us at ..... That might be a hoax...

  • That is horrible that card numbers were being sold! I am glad that he will get all the money back. Hopefully it will be a quick process.

I take what I said back. I would be peeved at the bank for putting that kind of message on a home message machine. That's kind of private and I think they should have left a message to just call them back. Also, sorry for Paul. That sucks.

This happened to lots of people in a town about 45 minutes north of us.  Scary stuff!  Glad everything is working out!

  • That sucks -my boss lives in Chino!!! This happened to Eric last week. Well a couple charges from Home Depot in VA happened, and they knew it wasn't us. We called and got a new card. We got the money refunded, and interest added from the transaction. The banks are really good about returning the monies back but you gotta doublecheck and look everything over.
