THE MAN HAS NO FILTER!
The ILs are back from their "snow bird" months in Florida and we went over there with dinner tonight.
Here are the answers I had to give FIL at dinner...you can use your imagination to fill in the rest of the conversation. (He has a very dry sense of humor and is generally a crabby 73 year old man.)
1. No - I will not just take a job at the grocery store. For now - I make more money on unemployment than a grocery store job would pay...also being on my feet 8 hours a day right now is not medically desirable. I will continue to look for an engineering job.
2. No - I will not work for the Navy ON A SUBMARINE - I plan to be around to raise my child. I know they are advertising engineer positions on the internet...I'm NOT a nuclear engineer - its not even my field!
3. No - I will not give up my career to home school our kid(s). Just because your friend's daughter's home schooled kids "seem" normal does not mean it is the right choice for all families.
4. No - I will not open a day care in my basement. I worked as a day camp counselor through HS and college summers and really - it isn't for me. Also no parent in their right mind would put their kid in my house when we have 4 pets and our yard backs up to train tracks.
5. No - I do not think that my engineering degrees were a waste - and No I do not think that someone without the education in engineering theory can do just a good a job as I can at structural engineering. Just because you were a "tin can chemist" (his words) at 3M making adhesives and you don't have a chem degree doesn't mean that every technical position out there shouldn't require an advanced degree.
6. Yes - your son (my DH) hated school. Yes - you ignored his requests to be put in an advanced magnet school b/c he was bored. No - he is not simply a non-conformist, he was bored and wanted a challenge - and regular school didn't provide that for him. Yes - that was 18+ years ago - why do you continue to bring it up?

Re: I Love my FIL...really I do (long)
Yes, very creative and thought provoking, but not for your life... ah.
...and it sounds like he cares and he's thinking...
Sounds like when my FIL suggests that we keep DH's 13 year old Corolla and sell my 2004 Altima because "you'll get more money for Breanne's car." And then buy a new car.
My response, "And what do we do when the 13 year old Corolla quits on us and we've got a payment on a brand new car and can't afford a 2nd car payment?"
I'm pretty sure I had the "you're freaking nuts" face on...but I know some of his "suggestions" were intended to be sarcastic - so I try not to let him rattle me. DH and MIL would chime in to my defense every now and then...but I can usually hold my own with FIL. DH retreated to the basement to work on their computer quickly after that.

Yep. That's why unemployment exists. It's not there so you have time to search for a job in your field instead of scraping by at minimum wage AND trying to job search. You should totally follow his suggestions.
Or perhaps not.
