Foam vs. spring mattresses

DH and I are considering making the move up to a king bed when we buy our first set of actual bedroom furniture soon. We like our Sealy Posturepedic pillowtop mattress now, but I'm wondering about trying a memory foam or latex foam mattress...I'm just worried about spending that much on something we might not like.

For those of you who have foam mattresses, does it offer enough support? Does it last a long time or does it make ruts where you sleep? Where would you recommend making the purchase?

Thanks in advance! We're doing a lot of updating in our house, and you ladies are a great resource for helping to make big decisions. Big Smile

Re: Foam vs. spring mattresses

  • love love love our foam mattress.  I bought it in CA so no reqs, but besides being really supportive, I like that it has a removable cover that I can wash and it has a crazy-long warranty (20 or 25 yrs).  I don't think spring mattresses even come close?

it does get hot so keep that in mind.  but I haven't slept on a spring mattress in TX so I don't know if it would be just as bad?

  • We've wanted one, but hear they are way too hot here in TX. If we do end up moving, we'll seriously be looking at them.

  • I had one before I moved in with DH, and I really regret getting rid of it.  I sleep on my side, and it offered perfect support - I never slept as well as I did with the memory foam.  Don't recall any issues with it being too hot in the summer.

Can't remember where I bought it, though, so no help there.

  • We decided not to get the memory foam bc it holds heat and DH is a hot-natured sleeper.

We went with the Sleep Number probably 7 years ago and it's definitely been worth it.

  • DH and I were going through the same thing a few months ago, we ended up going with a memory foam type mattress from Sams club, we really love it although it does get really warm, and in the beginning there is an odd smell after you take it out of the packaging.  (we used apples sliced in half sitting in a bowl on top of the mattress for a few days and the smell was mostly gone)   We got the king size and it is wonderful, it did seem to take a few nights to get used to it (because of the different type of support, I guess) but now we miss it when we are out of town!  We looked at a ton of different memory foam mattresses and chose this due to price (we didnt want to spend thousands of dollars and find out we hated it)  and we also liked that Sams has a return policy that would allow us to return it if we changed our mind.  I think we chose this one or a very similar version-  http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=181751&navAction=push

We have had it since Feb and there arent any ruts, and I think it will last for awhile.   Good luck!  Let me know if you have any questions

  • ditto the funky smell with the foam, but it went away pretty quickly.

I have heard through the grapevine that the Sleep Number mattresses have a wood board separating the two sides (if you get the dual control one) and when having sexy time if on your knees it can be very uncomfortable. Is this true?? I have been dying to ask someone!
