I refuse.

to buy anyone anything for their anniversaries.  I do not expect anything from anyone.  A card is too much for me, it's nice but I don't expect it.  And dammit, I'm not going to give them anything for theirs, I'm so over what DH's family does.  We got a gift card to a restaurant from BIL/SIL and his aunt and uncle too.  While nice, it's just not what I do or will do.  They may get a card, if they're lucky.

Guess his family didn't pay attention to the CLEAVE part of the ceremony.

Re: I refuse.

  • We don't give things for anniversaries either. We never got anything from SIL for ours and we never got them anything when they were married. Not in a bad way, but it was just never done. I think anniversaries are for the couple. If people want to get you something that's great, but not necessary.

Although, I might do something for a big anni - like a big milestone 10, 15, 50 or something similar but other than that no presents because you've been married 3 years!

  • Am I missing something?  Is there more to this?  Why are you upset about this? It sounds like they are just trying to be nice and supportive of your marriage.  And its okay that you don't plan to reciprocate but it sounds like you have some other issues going on....
  • I don't even send cards. I do send my parents flowers on milestone Anniversaries.
  • My MIL has sent us nice things both years.  Even if she were still married, I don't think I would send her anything on their anniversary and I really don't see anything wrong with that.  We don't ask for anything and she's just being kind.  I usually send my own parents an email or something acknowledging the anniversary and not much more.

Are you dealing with people who do nice things only so you'll do nice things back to them?

They're completely unsupportive of ANYTHING in our lives (especially when it comes to me.  All of them.)  Some of them only do it to look good to themselves or make them feel better, not because they like us or are supportive of our marriage, it's clear that they aren't so I HATE the farce of it all.  I'm ok with milestones, but it's been 2 years.  I know you probably weren't around when a lot of things went down with DH's family but his parents showed up 15 min until my studio opening was over because they decided to go to a party instead and then come later.  And no one else in his entire family showed up.  They're only 30 min away.  Not one.  So the farce of the whole thing PISSES me off.  I won't do anything because I don't think it's necessary.

    Got it.

  • What about re-gift'ing it as a giveaway on your blog. That would be awesome.

  • Or keep it and gift it back to them.
