Scary Doggie Moment This Weekend

Saturday night, Rudy and I were playing up on the bed.  It was wrestling/tickling type playing, so a little rough.  All of the sudden he begins to yelp really loud and for a really long time, at least 30 seconds which felt like an eternity.  We had no clue what was wrong or where he was hurt.  We tried our best to calm him down, console him and tell him he was a good boy.  We were petting/squeezing his paws, legs, shoulders, hips and couldn't figure it out.  DH got up to go in the kitchen and then he pops up and runs after him to beg for a treat.  Ever since he acted like everything was normal.  He is a golden and therefore is overly senstive, but it was just weird that he was so upset (more than we have ever seen him) and then be fine 5 minutes later.  I'm glad it worked out that way because DH had more than a few drinks at this point and I really didn't want to bring a drunk DH and broken dog to the animal hospital at 1am.

  • Bruno has done something similar and I wondered if it's some type of cramp. People get them so I guess dogs can too. Bruno yelped, hopped around for a minute then all was well again.
  • Oh, a cramp would make a lot of sense.  We couldn't figure out if he twisted something (his ankle maybe) and then was scared to step on it again and that was why he kept whining for so long.  But a cramp makes more sense why it took us so long to calm him down.  Thanks for sharing!
  • Do you think his toenail could have gotten caught on something? Glad everything is ok!
  • Oh man!  That does sound scary--for the moment.  I'm glad though that it sounds like he is OK now.
  • Glad he is ok now.  I know that was probably the scariest 30 seconds ever.  It would be so much easier if dogs could talk!

This is what we initially thought, but he would let us gently tug on each nail once we got him laying down and on his way to calm.  We were expecting more of a reaction if it was a nail that hurt him, but I guess you never really know.

  • Glad he's okay!

Lucy, our basset did something like this too, but she had actually sprained her tail. . .of all things.  She yelped like someone was killing her and scared the living ba-jesus out of our other dog.

  • Noel does this sometimes.  She is almost 10 and had arthritis, so if she moves the wrong way, it can be pretty sore.
