What's Everyone Reading?

I just finished The Time Traveler's Wife over the weekend, and really liked it.  I didn't think I would but I thought it had a compelling narrative and moved along pretty quickly, even though its 500+ pages.

I'm trying to figure out what to read next, I was thinking either The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver or Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama.

Any good suggestions?  What are you reading?

  • The Darkest Child by Delores Phillips was very good. It's a heavy read- but a story that will stay with you.

I hated the Poisonwood Bible but some people loved it.

I'm about to start another Kristin Hannah book.

  • I'm currently reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and it's really really good. The setting jumps around so you get to know lots of characters without it being overwhelming, and it's a good mystery story. There's some fairy tale mixed in as well which is really fun!

Next on my list is The Weight of Heaven. And I recently finished Snow Flower & The Secret Fan and Shanghai Girls, both by Lisa See, and they were both really wonderful.

  • I finished My Sister's Keeper a couple weeks ago. It wasn't what I was expecting, not that I had anything in mind. I liked it up until the ending. On the other hand, I was talking to my cousin about the book on Easter when I was about 2/3 done and she said she loved how the book ended. To each their own.

I'm reading a Luanne Rice book right now. She has a ton of books; very easy reads. Great for reading on the T, which is when I do most of my reading (as I'm not a huge reader but need something to pass the time).

  • I'm reading Slumdog Millionaire. I haven't seen the movie, but plan to watch it after I finish the book.
  • I read The Time Traveler's Wife a couple of weeks ago. I really liked it too and agree that it was a very fast read, which I wasn't expecting.

I just finished Confessions of a Shopaholic yesterday, and am trying to decide what to read next. I wasn't a huge fan of the book until the end. I actually had to take a break from it for a while because it was boring me, but I finally picked it up again this weekend and pushed through. Since I didn't mind it towards the end I am thinking of reading another from the series, but I'm afraid the bulk will be boring again. I've been meaning to ask about it on NBC.

lol I love this series! I've read them all at least twice. But I think they fly by, they're my favorite books to read while exercising, because I get so into the book that before I know it, 30 minutes have gone by. I think the next 2 books (Takes Manhattan and Gets Married) are a little more involved earlier on, so you might like them ok if you liked the end of Confessions. I didn't care for And Sister all that much, and I can't remember how I liked And Baby. Sophie Kinsella's other books are good, too, although I wasn't so into The Undomestic Goddess.

Last week I finished The Help, which I LOVED. This morning I finished Muse of Fire, by Dan Simmons... I like all of what I've read by him (although DH says Drood wasn't so great so I'm unsure about giving that a try), but Muse of Fire was just kind of weird and vague. DH has been sent to the library to get me March by Geraldine Brooks and anything by Gregory Maguire.

  • This morning I started "Push" by Sapphire (the book the movie "Precious" is based on).  Its shocking to say the least.  Much more graphic than the movie.

Before that I read "The Magic Hour" by Kristin Hannah.

Love love love the "Shopaholic" series and everything else by Sophie Kinsella aka Madeline Wickham!

I read that on vacation. Despicable, to say the least. Repulsive and horrifying that kind of life is a reality for precious children every day.

I also read House Rules, the new Jodi Picoult book. She is a light read too, always the same kind of stories and characters, but I plowed through the book.

South of Broad by Pat Conroy gets lots of raves. I liked how it was split between Charleston and San Francisco though I tend to think Pat Conroy is a bit cliche in his writing. He does write beautifully.

  • I finished Gods Behaving Badly a couple weeks ago (a friend lent it to me). It wasn't the best book I've ever read but it was entertaining and a really easy read. I've been reading Under the Tuscan Sun since then and I'm horribly bored. I never saw the movie but I thought that since it was made into a movie it must be good- I honestly can't imagine what could possibly happen in the movie because NOTHING happens in this book. Oh well. I'll probably just plow through it next week after my finals are done and find something better.
  • I'm reading Middlesex right now. It started a bit slow but it's been picking up and now I'm really liking it.

A recent read I completely loved is:

    Lullabies for Little Criminals

  • I just started reading Chelsea Handler's new book: Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.

It's already hilarious but a little raunchy. I find her books to be comic relief!

  • I just finished the 3rd book in the newest Tad Williams series, Shadowmarch. It's a fantasy series...kind of my guilty pleasure. I think my taste is a little different from everyone elses Wink

Yes - I'm really liking it now. I have a 6 hour flight to Cali tomorrow night so I'm bound to finish it soon!

  • Hi Ladies,
