Local anniversary locations?

I'm looking for a nice romantic weekend anniversary trip for DH and I in October. We've looked at going to Hocking Hills but that's kind of pricey because of the time of year.

We want to go somewhere within a few hours of home. Something fun, relaxing, and romantic.

Where have you gone and where did you stay? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!

Re: Local anniversary locations?

  • DH and I did a weekend at Bellterra.  Spa, golf, Jeff Ruby's.  Great rooms.

  • Ohio's biggest Amish area is north-ish of Columbus-but it's pretty $$ too.  Louisville, if I remember correctly, has a bunch of nice old B&Bs near downtown.  You could also go to Lexington/Central Kentucky.  It's very pretty (rolling hills, horses) and there's quite a few bourbon distilleries to tour.  Chicago and Nashville are both about 6 hours from Cincy.  I think I'd try to take the Megabus to Chicago b/c parking is killer.

  • I haven't personally been but my friend and several ladies on this board rave about Murphin Ridge Inn.  My friend went for the same occassion that you are looking for and loved it so much she said she's thinking about making it an annual thing.  Hopefully the others will chime in if they've had personal experience here.  I've heard nothing but great things!

I don't have a personal experience but Slim's chef left to go there. So food wise it should be really good.

We love going to Louisville. I would also suggest Midway or Bardstown. I think MIL's friend own's Beautiful dreamer B&B http://bdreamerbb.com/index.html

  • DH and I always say we're going to go to Murphin Ridge...7 years later and we've never been. (-=

I would recommend Ravenwood Castle (www.ravenwoodcastle.com)...that's where we got engaged, and we went back for a weekend last October. It's pretty much in the hocking hills region, and I can't say it's terribly cheap, but we had a great time (there's no internet, TV, or cell service out there, FYI).

  • You could try renting a house/cabin on one of the local lakes.  My family and I spend a lot of time in Lake Cumberland.  There's not a lot to do around, but if you want a weekend away from everything it's nice for that.
  • West Baden Resort....is in Indiana....I have not been there but my mom has and she says it's nice and has recommended it to DH and I for a weekend trip.

Also, Brown County can be nice and relaxing if you get a small cabin with a hot tub!?

  • I've been to Murphin Ridge.  My parents invited me to go with them a few years ago-I guess they weren't planning on a romantic vacation, ha-ha!  They have cabins with fireplaces but we stayed in a regular room.  It's not cheap but the food is good & it's very peaceful.  Breakfast is free, dinner is extra.  The chef uses lots of local, seasonal ingredients for the dinners.  It's gourmet American food, but probably not a good choice for picky eaters.  There are no TVs & cell phone reception might be spotty.  There are Amish in the area but they close their shops on Sundays.  I have a few photos on my Facebook page.
