Anyone own an electric lawn mower?

If so, what brand and how do you like it?  Bonus points if it's self-propelled.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone own an electric lawn mower?

  • I just pu? mine in the nestie garage sale but had it for 2 years. It worked great (I got rid of it b/c of the handle)...only complaint I had was constantly having to stop and move the extension cord as to not run over it.
  • have you looked into push mowers?  my dad told me this one received really good reviews in consumer reports:

    http://www.lowes.com/pd_317736-1078-6201_4294857303_4294937087?productId=3168445&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Push%2BMowers_4294857303_4294937087_?cm_cr=Mowers%20and%20Tractors%201.2-_-Web%20Activity-_-Mowers%20and%20Tractors%201.2%20A2%20Activity-_-SC_Mowers%20%20Tractors_Area2-_-48150_1

I want one but can't convince MH to buy it - he insists on just borrowing the neighbor's (gas) mower.  I refuse to use it so he's stuck mowing the weeds...errr, lawn.

  • ssinca - i would totally be all for that, except it's DH's job to mow the lawn and he's barely going for an electric lawnmower as it is.  Though maybe if they have a good return policy we can try it out and return it if we hate it.  It does seem like it'd be a lot easier to maneuver...  but then I've never mowed a lawn in my life.  This is DH's one job yard-work wise (not sure how I got stuck with the weeding, gardening, fertilizing, and everything else) so I'm going to have to let him choose the mower in the end.  All the self-propelled ones are $400+ though.  Bleh.

I'm just glad we're not going to go back to gas.

  • We own a Neuton which was Consumer Guide recommended for a long time. I think it's been pushed off by another brand, but it still rates very well.

My husband likes it a lot. It's a lot less of hassle than our old gas powered mower. I've used it a time or two and I like it. I can't tell a huge difference between using it and using a regular mower.

The Neuton is battery powered, so there's no cord to worry about. You only have to plug it in to charge the battery. It's not noisy. And their customer service was excellent. Our battery started losing a charge really quickly after we came out of warranty. DH called to tell them about it and they acknowledged we might have a defective battery and sent us a new one and a new adapter free of charge. Two years later, we haven't had any problems with the battery.

    Highly recommended.

  • I've had a Neuton for three years and I love it. It is quiet, light, easy to push. No gas, oil, or cords to deal with. If you have a large lot, you will need an extra battery. I have an average size lot (two story house, so a pretty good amount of grass) and I can just barely get the front and back done on one charge.

At the time I bought it, the City of Austin and City of Sunset Valley had some rebates. You might want to see if there are any out there this year.

  • Thanks guys!  Does anyone have access to Consumer Reports now?  We used to but of course our subscription just ran out.  If you can send me a screen shot of the ratings that would be awesome!  baustria at gmail

I wish my city or utility company did something like that.  I just emailed our mayor to see if he'll start something like this in the spirit of Earth Day.  Good to hear the Neutons get good reviews though!  I like that you can order spare batteries and blades.  Good to hear that it's easy to push too.  DH is so set on the self-propelled but maybe if he doesn't have to put so much muscle into it he'll be more receptive to a push mower.

Well I underestimated my DH!  He agreed to try the Fiskars reel mower!  I'm soooooo excited.  I'm picking it up from Lowes today.  I think I might even try it out myself.  Who knew I'd get so pumped about a lawn mower!  LOL

If this doesn't work out we'll go back to looking at electric...

  • awesome!  please, please, please let me know how it is - I'm going to try and convince MH to at least look into buying one...although maybe we should re-sod the yard first.  :/

  • I'll try and post a review next week.  We had a lawn service come out and mow yesterday so it'll be a few days at least before we get to test this bad boy.  And our yard (at least the back) definitely needs to be resodded too.  It's 99% weeds, .5% dirt and .5% good grass.  Front yard is a bit healthier though so we'll be able to see how it works in a variety of different scenarios. :)

I went and picked it up from Lowe's today at lunch though... kinda of psyched to take it home and put it together!
