RTP Area - Questions! :)

Hi everyone!

I'm an Austin Nestie - and am going on a business trip to RTP next week.  Well, not only is it a business trip, but a "scoping out the place" as well.. its about 95% likely that we'll be moving there in the near future (1-3 months). We will be there, get some work stuff done, and check out some neighborhoods in Chapel Hill and other various places.

First question - are there any must see neighborhoods up there?  No kids, and I'll probably be looking to go to grad school at UNC in a year.

Second question - any recommendations of things to do on a Monday or Tuesday night while we are there on our short visit? :)

Thanks!  The board looks entertaining!  If the move notches up to 100% I'd definitely be active around here!

Re: RTP Area - Questions! :)

  • What sort of things are you looking for in a neighborhood and do you know your price range?
fmrealty.com is a good site to use to search for houses.

I used to live in Durham, just outside RTP and we recently moved to Raleigh.

One of my favorite neighborhoods in the Chapel Hill area is Southern Village - http://www.southernvillage.com

Check out Acme on Tuesday night - they have "recession Tuesdays" where they serve reduced price meals.  It's a great deal. http://www.acmecarrboro.com/

Acme is in Carrboro, Carrboro is the funky little town next to Chapel Hill (they run right into each other).

I've got to post and run, have fun on your visit.

  • One of my favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill is Margaret's Cantina.  The prices are reasonable and the food is always fantastic.
  • Awesome - Thanks!

As for the neighborhood.. well, over here we have an awesome modern architectural house downtown, and LOVE it.  I know he is opposed to anything that is way older, and I am opposed to anything too cookie cutter (which we have an abundance of over here).  We're actually thinking about renting over buying until we get settled, so probably about 2k a month max.  Definitely need a yard with three dogs. I'd like a neighborhood that makes it easy to walk or bike to stores and restaurants for sure!  Anything around there like that?

  • I'm not familiar with Chapel Hill, so I can't speak so much for that area.  But I know that you could probably find something you are happy with in or near downtown Raleigh.  Not sure what commuting times you would be comfortable with, but it would probably be 30-45 minutes to RTP and maybe 45-60 minutes to Chapel Hill.  Depending on the graduate program you are looking to pursue, there are quite a few colleges in Raleigh that might be of interest- North Carolina State University, Meredith College (MBA), Campbell University, etc.
  • Yeah, I'd be looking to get into an MBA program for sure.  Thanks for the schools info!  That will be quite helpful. :)

Commute - I am OK with as long as it isn't stop and go.  He would be working in RTP so that may be reasonable.

  • Hey welcome to the board!  My  husband works in RTP and I go to school at UNC - we live in Durham and like it a lot.  You might take a look at some of the places in Durham - I have a friend who lives in the Watts-Hillandale area and loves it!  We live in a "cookie-cutter" neighborhood down by Southpoint mall  - we really like it but it sounds like it wouldn't be your cup of tea!

Carrboro would also be worth checking out - and it is fantastic for being able to get around by foot/public transportation.

I would second the rec to try Acme - we also really like Elmo's Diner - there's one in Carrboro and one in Durham.  Franklin St. in Chapel Hill has a ton of places to eat as well - lots of good restaurants in the Triangle area!

  • oh and a few places in Durham do trivia on Tuesday nights - it's a fun time!
