I'm going swimsuit shopping tonight. As is probably evident by the fact that I've put this off until the night before we leave for Miami, this is about my least favorite thing to do.
Does anyone else feel like this is the worst thing for one's self esteem? Flame away, but I'm wishing for SJP's "gross" body right about now.
Re: Ugh...plans for tonight
Yeah, swimsuit shopping. I wonder if someone exists who is never self-concious in a swimsuit.
Really, you just can't let it get to you. When you go to critique each suit, instead of listing the negatives (this make my stomach look big) try listing the positives (this one makes my butt look bangin').
I know I'm going to sound all stupid and gag-me-positive, but seriously - you are the same (beautiful) before and after swimsuit shopping. You only *feel* less because of swimsuit shopping but you're actually exactly the same as you were before the event. So if you feel good, don't let something that doesn't matter change that.
Thanks greenglam!
And it's nice to know I'm not alone. I have to wonder if we are all our worst critics on this type of thing. If someone else saw my body in a bikini, would they really notice my spare tire as much as I do? I wish I could just get over it.
Very true and that's a great idea. I appreciate the gag-me positive today
We ARE! I'm sure whatever you pick is going to be fab. What makes me feel a little better and confident when buying a new suit is getting a really cute sarong or cover-up to go along with it, and kind of making an ensemble out of it. If that helps any...
Actually, I bet there's plenty of girls who would kill to be as fit as you. It's all perspective.
You don't have to buy a bikini either - if there's a one peice that makes you feel more comfortable or you think flatters your figure more - go for it!
But I want so badly to look like a Shape cover model in a bikini! I have this idea in my head that wearing a tankini or one piece concedes that I have a gut. I know that's not true as I've seen many a smokin' model in Elle wearing a one piece. Hmm, maybe I need to step away from the magazines...
Kerco, good idea on the coverup. I thought about doing that.
Thanks girls; I am definitely feeling better about it already.
This is my approach too. And I learned a couple of years ago that VS swimsuits fit me pretty well, so I order them from the web site and try them on at home. The other positive to this approach is that then my husband is around and he tells me how hot I look which gives me a giant self-esteem boost when all I'm focusing on are the parts of my body that I don't like.
I know this doesn't help you now because you need to find something tonight, though. But, no, you're definitely not alone. I'm with LST in that I think shopping for jeans is the worst, but swimsuits is definitely second worst.
Good luck!
Yeah, my husband believes honesty is the best policy when it comes to these things and he can sometimes have a critical eye. It's nice on one hand because I know if he says it looks good then it truly does. On the other hand, he isn't one to wolf whistle at whatever I'm wearing.
I don't know if it's better to have him help, but sometimes I'm not down with the whole "turn to the side..." "okay, now turn again..." "yeah, that's fine" approach that he has to my wardrobe. Maybe this is one of the problems with being married to a quality engineer.
:::raises hand:::
Hehe...I'm working on it...5.8 lbs down. Only a million and a half to go.
I hate swimsuit shopping with a passion. I order them online and try them all on at home.
Ha, yeah... maybe best to leave him out of the process then.
I'm with the rest of you- bathing suit shopping is the worst. I've tried doing it online, but I always order the wrong size so I have to try them on.
On a bright note, I'm super pumped about the vintage style suits like this in style this summer! Finally a one piece that won't make me look like a grandma. I also want a hat like the one in the photo- perfect protection for my fair skin and scalp

If you are near a Sears I highly suggest looking at Lands End's line this year. I bought two tankini's from them and I am in love. I bought my one piece from them last year as well, and that suit held up through a lot of wear and tear.
Just a thought. They are really flattering styles, too.
I survived! I got a one piece from Old Navy. The H said he really likes it and it was worth buying. That is high praise indeed from him. Between the new one and an old faithful--I'm ready to hit the beach!
I didn't have much success finding a cute coverup, though. I might have time for a short trip out tomorrow after work, so we'll see.
BLECH! My post baby bod is even worse than before. Glad you found one you liked!
Also: magazine covers are airbrushed, so you *could* look like that... you'd just have to photograph yourself, airbrush it and carry it around :oP No one in real life looks like that.
This is kind of a lame picture, but it's the only one on the ON's website.
It is the black one in the upper left.
The funniest thing is that before I went shopping, L and I went to Wild Chef for dinner and I stuffed mysefl silly. Oops!
Glad to hear your shopping trip was (mostly) a success!
I'm not sure when you're leaving, but if it's very soon, I hope you have a great trip!
