**Lisa with little John**

Lisa!!! Congrats on becoming a mother and having such a cutie pie. I just finally got to read your birth story, although I follow you on FB :)  I am so happy little John came so quick and almost painlessly. hee hee

I read in your post that John may be tongue-tied. Kai was (got it snipped), so if you have any questions at all let me know.  Who did John get it from (its hereditary)?  I didn't find out Kai was tongue-tied until a few weeks after he was born and my supply really tanked because of it. Hopefully that doesnt happen to you.

Congrats to both you and John! Now all our TMI stories will be about being sh!t on and thrown up on, etc. lol

Re: **Lisa with little John**

  • Hey Amy! Yeah, TMI stories about poop and pee from now on. I've noticed that John's FB status updates are about diaper changes or poop. I would always kind of roll my eyes at people who only posted baby-related status updates (especially poop and pee ones) but now that I have a husband who's guilty of doing it, I can't do that anymore. =P

I didn't know that being tongue-tied was hereditary. Maybe he got it from me because as far as I know, John wasn't. I was raised in an orphanage as a baby so I really don't know anything about my biological family's medical history. When the lactation consultant came to check up on us before we left the hospital, she mentioned that some babies are still able to nurse just fine and commented that little John's sucking was pretty good. How did you figure out that it was affecting your supply? I've been nursing every 2 hours or so and when nursing time comes around, my boobs start to leak like crazy. I never imagined I'd leak like this! John caught me at the computer yesterday, holding a tupperware container below my boobs to catch the milk and laughed at me! I think my supply is okay and little ajohn seems to be getting enough milk to keep him full.

The lactation consultant mentioned that his tongue might result in a speech impediment like a lisp but that if it does, snipping it would be a quick way to fix the problem. How did Kai take to the procedure? Was he in any discomfort afterwards?

Oh, and how's this for weird? Little John's cord stump fell off last week Friday but we have no idea what happened to it. It was there when I changed him before John came home from work and then it wasn't there anymore when John was playing with him. We checked his diaper, the changing table, the floor. Nothing. The mystery of the disappearing cord stump... =P

Wow Lisa, I had no idea.  That's intense.

And I laughed out loud about the disappearing cord stump.  You'll probably find it 2 years from now when little J is exploring all around and asks "what's this mama?" Big Smile

  • Lisa I TOTALLY know what happened to the cord stump. You have a dog (or cat) dont you? lol ;) I am not kidding either.  My dogs will eat anything including the gel in the pamper diapers. grrr....

We found out Kai was tongue-tied from the lactation consultant a few months (or was it weeks? Sleep deprived) after he was born.  The NICU nurses, lactation lady in the hospital never caught it. I went to a special lactation consultant rec'd by a friend because the only way I could nurse him was with a nipple shield.  The nurses and the one in the hospital didnt seem to mind, but I did.  I had full supply too but after weeks/months of him not getting enough, I think he got frustrated with me.  Thats when the supply started tanking. So I pumped to try to keep up, but no use at that point.  The lady says he wasnt bad either, but it must have been enough to do something to my supply and his frustration.  So we got it snipped right away.

The day of the snipping was horrible for me. I made Sean take him and go in the room. I stayed by the door and balled because he screamed.  But it literally was 30 seconds a little bit of screaming and he was fast asleep after. It was worse on me!  We were warned he may have a lisp too, so that is why we decided to do it. It is supposed to be easier on them now then when they are a toddler. I cant imagine having Kai get that done now. Oh no! So we made the right choice.  They just use scissors and snip it.  My pedi said he could do it in his office but I opted for an ENT to do it. Some dentists do it too. The other good thing about getting it done now is that you are still breastfeeding and breastmilk is great for cuts. It will heal so quickly. He doesnt have a lisp or anything. He still has a little fork (?) in his tongue. You know when you stick out your tongue and it is perfectly round or with a little gather-like that.

I am sure you are exhausted and overwhelmed and sleep deprived...and lol... Isnt it fun? ;) It only gets better :) I cant imagine my life any other way!

Hey Lisa!  Did you know that Steven is tongue-tied?  I didn't even know about this phrase before opening this post.  We called it his "fork tongue" (like a snake Stick out tongue) growing up.  I've never talked about it with my mom, but I don't recall there being any problems with breastfeeding.  And, as you know, Steven doesn't have (nor has he ever had) any type of speech impediment.  And, a little TMI, you know he's popular with the ladies so it doesn't seem to pose any problems in that arena.  Sorry, I know you probably don't want to think of little John in that way yet, but just thought I'd throw it out there.  Stick out tongue

ETA: I also didn't know that being tongue-tied was hereditary.  I don't know of anyone in our immeidate family (going back to our grandparents) who have it.

  • Lori, yeah, I was adopted when I was 10 months old and as far as I know, was given up at birth and raised in an orphanage until that time.

Amy, we don't have any pets so it's got to be somewhere in the apartment!  I mean, I don't know what we'd do with it if we had it, but it just seems to odd to not have a clue what happened to it, you know?  We may find it the way Lori said, when little J is exploring the apartment once he becomes mobile, lol.  Let's just hope that he doesn't eat it first!

Nicole, it's good to know that Steven's tongue-tie never gave him any problems, even with the ladies, lol.  The lactation consultant said that sometimes the frenulum is elastic enough that it doesn't interfere with breastfeeding or speech even though it looks like it might.  So far he seems to be handling the breastfeeding like a champ.  He even started gaining back some of his weight on day 3!  We don't have a baby scale here at home but I've noticed his fingers and toes filling out a bit more.  His next appointment is next week so we'll see how his weight gain is going.  If it's all good, we won't worry about his tongue-tie for now.

Gah, I can't believe he'll be 2 weeks old this Sunday!  Time flies!

We have good days and bad days.  Today was a good day.  He slept pretty well last night and when John woke up at around 3 a.m. to help me change his diaper, even John commented, "Oh my god, it's only 3 a.m.?  I feel like I got a full night's sleep!!"  Stick out tongue  He took a couple of good naps today during the day so I even got to sneak a nap for myself.  Yay!  I was also able to do a load of laundry, take a shower, and get some craft fair related work done!  Yeah, today was a really good day!
