Question for Vegans/Vegetarians

I don't know if any of you are, but I was wondering if you had a recs as to a great vegan cookbook you would recommend or what food(s) you always have in your house?

I'm just trying to get a list together so I can do my shopping this weekend.

TIA!

Re: Question for Vegans/Vegetarians

  • I kind of posted on this in your vent. I've never been a strict vegitarian/vegan, but I have gone without eating meat for prolonged periods of time for health reasons. Things I always had

    Eggs

    Pasta

    Brown Rice

Tomato Sauce and Paste (for homeade sauce)

    Veggies Frozen and Fresh

    Fruit Frozen and Fresh

    Cereal

Milk (I know it's a basic, but I ended up drinking a lot more during my meatless diet)

    Yogurt

Like I said in the other post, if you want meals I used to eat, I'd be happy to share.

  • Sheri didn't you say you were going without dairy too?

TWINK would be a good one to ask for this.

  • I did and I know, but I didn't know if she was the only one on here.  That's all.
  • I am almost vegan, I still eat eggs but cant have any dairy and am not really a meat eater.  i will have seafood though. My staples include

Silk soymilk (very vanilla for drinking)

Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk (for cereal and cooking this tastes almost like real milk)

    hummus

    pasta

    can tomatos for sauce

    frozen and fresh veggies

    fresh fruit

    avacados

    smart balance light "butter"

bread (look at ingredients some have milk, whey or caesin in it)

My SIL is full vegan and always has firm tofu in the house.

  • One of my close IRL friends is transitioning from vegetarian to vegan and likes this cookbook...

I don't have any personal experience with it, but she's mentioned it a few times and commented on how the recipes are good.

As far as food suggestions, I'd try out quinoa.  It's a grain and very versatile.  It's great in both savory and sweet dishes, and can be added to practically everything.

I have this blog bookmarked (I've been meaning to try out some of the recipes), but there's a ton of vegan delicious-looking stuff in here...

  • Veruca's blog suggestions are really good. We have the Moosewood Cookbook which is great.

Jack and I eat Veg/Vegan 4 out of 7 days of the week. Honestly, it saves us money. Yes, fresh vegetables cost more but they're unless you're buying a whole chicken, they're usually cheaper per pound.

Just make sure you're still getting protein. Tofu, peanut butter, quinoa, etc.

  • Sheri, there's a poster on H&F that does a lunch box vegan blog...

She might have some links to other suggestions... or go on What's Cooking and see if you get any blogs or sites. GL!

  • Sheri!!!   These two cookbooks are great.  My stepmom ONLY cooks vegetarian and these are her favorite.

    Moosewood Cookbook

    Chez Panise Vegetables

The second of the two is put out by this amazing chef who has a restraurant in my area.  Her food is delicious!
