Baptism Present

My cousin is Southern Baptist and is being baptized this weekend. I just found out about it this morning. Since we can't go I was going to send a card. Should I send a gift, and if so what, I would normally send a savings bond, but she's 10 and it won't mature before she's out of college. I'm not opposed to sending money either, but we don't have a huge history of this in my family and I don't know the etiquette.

Re: Baptism Present

  • For Elise's baptism (though we're Catholic), she received several necklaces with crosses on it - some with her birthstone in the center.  She also received a teddy bear that had been blessed.  Maybe a rosary?  I'm not sure what the protocol is in Baptists....

  • How about a really nice Bible or Bible cover?
  •  I like what rachael said, or you could do a daily devotional for children or teens... Baptists dont do rosaries...
  • i'd say either a youth/teen bible with her name on the front, or some sort of jewelry - a cross pendant or small stud earrings.
  • No rosaries. A bible or bible cover is a great idea. The jewelry is nice too. I think you'd be fine with just a card if you guys aren't that close. Especially since you found out last minute.
  • I like the idea of a youth/teen Bible. I had one that I wore the cover off when I was a teenager, it was great because it had all kinds of stuff in it that related to the real world. I still have it around here somewhere, if I can find it I can send you the name of it.

Maybe a Chicken Soup for the Soul book? They have ones that aren't religious but also ones that are.

  • Thanks for all of the advice, I FINALLY got in touch with her mom and she already has a bible and a bible cover. I went to the jewelry store yesterday and we got her a charm bracelet that she can grow into, as well as a charm of praying hands. I also learned that gold is SO expensive right now, I was really surprised!
