So why is it...

that 5 miles on the bike at the gym kills me and 10 miles on a real bike, outdoors on the open road, barely phases me?  I'm happy about it, but I don't understand!  FWIW, I go about the same speed in the gym and on my real bike, and tackle some small hills both ways. Anyone have any insight?

Re: So why is it...

  • It's all mental! When you're in the gym there's nothing to do but sit there and think about how much your legs and butt hurt, how far you've gone, how much further you have to go, etc. When you're on the road, you're aware of your surroundings and enjoying the scenery. It's not necessarily harder in the gym, it's just that you're thinking so much more about it.

    Cliche? Maybe. True? Absolutely.

  • I agree with Chrissy.

I used to hate walking on the treadmill at the gym. Now, I have a treadmill at home and can watch "Sex & The City" or any other DVD while I walk, and I suddenly find myself walking for miles and miles...

  • The bike I use at the gym has pseudo-scenery. :) It's an Expresso bike and I choose my path based on difficulty and length, and you watch the path and scenery on the screen while riding along. I even saw an abominable snowman on one of the routes :) And of course I listen to my music the whole time.

I'm 99% sure I'm going to have to break the triathlon rules for the running portion of the tri and listen to music to make it through. I simply can not run without a distraction!

I'd bet money that you won't be the only one! Just make sure to wear your ipod discretely and don't put your earbuds in until you're away from the transition area.

  • Thanks for the tip. I actually need to work on the ipod part. I can't use my iTouch, it's too big. I think I'll have to use my old sony one, which unfortunately I can't put new music on because the software doesn't exist anymore! lol
