for "fear of rain."

GRAND RAPIDS -- Rob Bliss has canceled his Founding Day Parade on Saturday.
Bliss said he learned Monday that he needed to call off the event by the end of the day today if he didn't want to incur city fees for the parade route set-up. The weather forecast still predicts rain for Saturday, so Bliss said a cancellation would be likely anyway.
Bliss said before Monday, he was unaware of the city fees charged even with a parade cancellation.
"I could be charged $1,000-plus for an event that's not happening, which means that would all come out of my pocket. So I had to make the decision now," he said.
"I can only deeply apologize that the weather did not work out in our favor. Definitely something I didn't particularly want to do. I would have preferred to simply do the event. That's a risk with all outdoor events."
Bliss said making the decision now instead of waiting until Friday also will prevent entrants from working even further on their floats.
"I would hate to have them work on this all week long," Bliss said. "Hopefully by doing this, as well, people won't spend as much time, otherwise."
Re: Bliss cancels Founding Day parade...
I don't even know who this Rob Bliss guy is, but why is he even in the news? Everything I read about him is pretty much just all about him.
Who the eff cares? He seems like such a major tool.
I think it probably works in his favor to have a chance of rain. It didn't sound like too many groups signed up.
I wish someone took up chalk flood this year. I liked going down with the kids and walking around. I think Allison would have been more into it this year.
Suze - I about laughed out loud at your last sentence.
OMG, I almost spit my water out when I read this. I'm seriously cracking up. Probably b/c I feel the same way. WTF is the big deal with this guy?
I'd think he'd reschedule the event instead of flat out canceling it. What about the people who have put time and money into having floats made for this parade? And what a scheduling blunder anyway. This Saturday is GVSU's graduation downtown. There's already going to be extra people in town trying to find their way around, find parking, etc. so it seems like a brilliant idea to block off a bunch of streets for a parade, right? Uh duuuh.
Don't blame the rain. Blame your bad idea instead.
I'm mixed on Rob Bliss. I'm all for doing fun stuff and bringing attention to GR. But it seems he needs to think ahead a bit more and not assume everyone will be all "OMG WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA" to everything he suggests.
ITA. It irritates me that all of his events seem to be about Rob Bliss, not about the city or its residents. I think he needs to get over himself.
Thank you for giving me words on how I feel. That is exactally how I feel. I really like how he was able to get people downtown for events like chalk flood and such, but he is way too into himself. His attitude with Art Prize put the nail in the coffin for me.
Also, granted there are no parades that day, but shceduling stuff on the first day of Tullip Time probably isn't a good idea. A lot of area bands, businesses, etc are gearing up for those parades later in the week.
I feel the same.
