About how many houses did you look at before you bought?

I think I looked at around 10 when I bought my first house.

My H didn't look at any when he bought - it was the house that they were renting, so he's never house hunted before.

We are looking at #13 and #14 tonight (hopefully) .  After these last two, we will be making a decision.

Do you remember how many you looked at?

Re: About how many houses did you look at before you bought?

  • We were only considering condos, and I think we looked at every development that was around in 2002.  There were probably at least three or four neighborhoods that had at least one or two floorplans available.

We decided on the one we bought because it had the best floorplan for the money and we really liked how natural the neighborhood was--it didn't feel like all of the units were stacked on top of each other.  We just *knew* it was the one.  Even though some things weren't as we expected, we still love almost everything about the actual condo we live in and that makes it worth it.

  • We physically looked at 2 houses both times.  The first time we were young and knew nothing, and needed a house fast.  And our budget was small, so we didn't have a ton of options.

This time DH looked at hundreds online, and if we both agreed on a house he would drive by it during work.  The house we bought is the second house we walked through and we just fell in love.  It was more than I wanted to spend, but after running the numbers the difference in monthly payment wasn't that high so we went for it.  I'm SO glad we did, I am in love with my new house :)

  • I don't remember how many in person.  I'd guess around 20 - 30.

We looked at about a zillion on GRAR. :-P

Gah.  Tell me about it.  I am so sick of real estate websites.  Stick out tongue

  • We looked at a ton online and probably toured about 50....what a nightmare. I'm very happy we got our house, but I never want to go through that again.
  • I looked at about 15? I had limited time though (came to visit for a few days, and had to make a decision then), and probably would've looked at more if I had had the opportunity to.

We were probably around this range too. But we were looking for a very specific price range and it was before the market started going down and prices followed.

This. We also went to lots and lots of open houses.

As for making an actual appointment to go through a house it was only 5. We made second visits to 3 houses and took my dad along (who is in the construction field and very knowledgeable) and made our decision for there.

  • We also looked at a zillion online.  We also wondered through some (maybe 6-8 open houses) before we got serious in order to get a better idea of what we were looking for.  Once we got serious, I think we went through about 10.

  • Five, but we live in a small town.
  • We scoured the internet realty postings for a long time, did a few drive bys to check out neighborhoods. The house that we bought was the first and only house that we actually toured with a realtor. We're pretty happy with the house, but the next house that we buy I think we will be a lot pickier. We'll have more of an idea of what our "must haves" will be. (I definitely want a much larger kitchen and a second bath.)

Isn't it funny how once you move in you realize what you need?

We need more closests!  It's not something I was thinking about when I bought my first house.  But it's definitely on the list for #2.
