Anyone made their own baby meat?

Dh is dying to give the baby meat... he's a meataholic! :) I on the other hand eat meat once in awhile. It makes no difference to me but I looked on wholesomebabyfood.com and wondering if anyone has actually made their own here...

Any suggestions/tips? Any things your baby liked better than others?

So far Bella's had: prunes/plums, nectarines, apples, pears, green beans(hates!), carrots, peas (hates), avocado, sweet potatoes, winter squash, acorn squash, zucchini and white potatoes. Any other tips on fruits or veggies that people have made?

We're waiting for peaches to be in season and hoping she loves those! Any other suggestions?

Re: Anyone made their own baby meat?

  • Hi Sarah! I have made all of Wai's food, including meat. I give her wild caught salmon (filets, and patties from Costco), organic chicken, and ground turkey. The first "meat" she had was the chicken, and I ran it through the food processor so the pieces were tiny and mixed it in with a red lentil/yam/carrot soup (since that's what I had on hand). I also like to mix in orzo pasta or even a little organic cheese sometimes. I still haven't fed her beef. Ideally I'd like it to be grass fed and hormone free, which unfortunatley is hard to find in my area, but if you could find an organic ground beef, that would be easy to make and serve with mashed potatoes and zucchini or other veggie of choice. Wai's favorite fruit is banana, and fave veggie is broccoli. HTH!
  • I bought some organic chicken from Whole Foods and made this http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/MeatRecipes.htm recipe (Chicken Casserole). Ashton didn't love it...texture reasons not because of taste.  I have since switched to Earth's Best stage 2 chicken with sweet potato and he eats that. I think it is just the texture for him...he gags and actually pukes some times. Since I did freeze it, I keep offering him a cube a week to see if he is ready. But I do have to say that I am impressed with Earth's Best and have bought a few others that Ashton has enjoyed. I hope to start making it again soon since I bought a bunch of recipe books, but I'm just buring myself out trying to do too much.  I hate taking time away from Ashton.

  • Thanks so much for the input! I'm ready to make some more stuff for her. She LOVES eating but she still loves breastfeeding too. Did you BF Wai? Just wondering if once you increased or added things if she backed down on the BF... I'm not wanting that to happen just yet. I've been just giving her things without spices so far and only two things mixed at a time. I haven't given any cheese or yogurt yet, even though her dr said it was ok... I figure, I'm enough milk for her for now :)

Bella HATES broccoli, maybe I'll start mixing a cube in stuff she does like and see if she'll eventually like it :)  I can hope, we're big broccoli eaters at our house.

  • I'm still BFing Wai. She loves to nurse. We've cut down to BFing 3-4 times a day since it is no longer her main source of nutrition. I waited on the cheese and yogurt too. I'm still not giving her straight cow's milk (don't plan to), but she likes cheese and Yo Baby Yogurt. I have a book called Top 100 Baby Purees by Annabel Karmel. Her recipes are pretty easy, and I use that book as a guide. She has a recipe called Lovely lentils (the soup I previously mentioned) and I've actually added broccoli to that puree. Maybe you could try it as a base and "hide" the vegetables Bella doesn't care for. Here is the recipe if you're interested.

    1/2 cup finely chopped onion

2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped

    2 tablespoons chopped celery

    1 tablespoon vegetable oil

    1/4 cup split red lentils

1 medium sweet potato (8 ounces), peeled and chopped

1 3/4 cups Vegetable or Chicken Stock (I used low sodium organic vegetable broth) or water

Saute onion, carrots, and celery in the vegetable oil for about 5 minutes or until softened. Add the lentils and sweet potato and pour in the stock or water. Bring to a boil, turn down the heat, and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Puree in a blender.

Just ordered that book from the library, I'm waiting for it to get here. I actually ordered a couple of other books too... When did you start introducing onions and such? I've only given her plain stuff so far or mixed two veggies. I bought fish, chicken and turkey to cook today so we'll see how that goes. I figure I'll mix it with a veggie that she likes and see how that goes :) You never know with her. She's a gagger too just like Ashton! I think that's why she hates broccoli because of the texture, although who knows for sure!

Glad to know you are still BFing, I'm hoping to make it to at least a year and then beyond that, we'll see. She still gets up 2-3 times at night to nurse and it bothers DH... I'm tired and sometimes I wish she would STTN but I know once she does I'll miss the night time nursing...

  • At around 10 months I started adding some spices as well as onion and garlic. That's about the age I intoduced meat to her too. Before then I was giving her scrambled eggs, lentils, beans, and tofu for protein. I'm all about going at your own pace, even though I knew I could introduce certain foods earlier, I wasn't in a rush.

Wai still does not STTN. She usually wakes up around 4am and most of the time I nurse her back to sleep. It's a habit that probably needs to be broken, but I don't really mind because it gets her back to sleep fast and that means a little more shut-eye for me! I thought I'd stop the BFing by 12 months, but it looks like we'll go a little longer. Within the next couple of weeks I want to start doing just mornings and nights.
