Relocating to Harrisburg in June...HELP!!

Hi Ladies,

My husband has just accepted a job outside Harrisburg and we will be moving there from Florida in mid-June. I have absolutely NO idea what I'm getting myself into! Do you have any suggestions for places to live, things to do? We will be very pressed on time to find a place to live (we will be renting) so to have an idea will be very helpful.

Thank you so much in advance!

Re: Relocating to Harrisburg in June...HELP!!

  • What area of Harrisburg are you looking into? Budget?
  • Welcome to PA ... a little early.

Harrisburg is a neat area where you can enjoy the small town life and yet they still have some interesting places to dine at. Plus we are only a few driving hours from Philadelphia, DC, NYC and Baltimore.

In terms of finding a place to live in the Harrisburg area, I would note that this area is "separated" into two areas - West Shore and East Shore and that basically means which side of the river oen lives on. I myself prefer the West Shore. That said, I would suggest looking for homes in Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg and New Cumberland. All are very nice small towns with low crime and about a 5-15 minute drive to downtown city.

It has been a long time since I've rented but our Harrisburg newspaper website is www.pennlive.com. Hopefully your hubby's new company will provide some relocation services.

     Hope that helps. Good luck!

  • The area you're going to be in will definitely help.  What town will he be working in?
  • Hi there!  I relocated here from FL a few years ago.  It's been an adjustment, but I really like it so far.  It's so nice to not sweat to death every summer, lol.

Like PPs have said, there are two "sides", West Shore and East Shore.  I live on the West Shore (Mechanicsburg, moving to Camp Hill in a few weeks) and really enjoy it.  We've rented a townhome from PMI (www.rentpmi.com) for the past few years.  The Rockledge townhomes are nice (that's where we live) or you can look on pennlive or craigslist.

Good luck and feel free to ask more questions!

  • Thank you all so much! My husband will be working in Gettysburg, and I'm not sure if that changes any of the locations that you all have suggested.

I am very nervous about the move, knowing it's going to be so different and an adjustment, but hopefully we will be able to find something comfortable.

Thanks again for the info, it definitely helps. The whole idea of townships and all that is going to be interesting to get used to!

  • Gettysburg is almost 45 minutes to an hour away from Harrisburg.  Why commute that long if not necessary?  Why not look in Gettysburg itself or small nearby towns such as Fairfield/Carroll Valley, Littlestown, Waynesboro, Chambersburg, East Berlin, New Oxford, or Hanover?  I live in one of those smaller towns, so if you are interested in more information or  have questions, feel free to email me at holly9599@comcast.net

    Good luck!

I'd ditto exactly what Holly said.  I'm in Gettysburg itself, and you're welcome to email me also w/questions if you want - thepastorswife07 @ gmail.com.

  • Thank you all so much for commenting. I realize that Harrisburg is a little bit of a commute to Gettysburg and that is something that my hubby and I have discussed. Moving from Orlando, FL, a 45 minute commute really is not that long or unheard of and both of us are prepared for that.

To be completely honest, I have never lived in a "small town" and am frightened at the idea of being so far from a city. From what I've read, Harrisburg isn't exactly a bustling metropolis, but being closer to a large(er) city is kind of comforting to me. One of the reasons we want to rent our first year is to figure out where we'd like to be and see how things go since neither one of us have spent more than a day in PA.

We will be visiting Gettysburg/Harrisburg and everywhere in between to find a place in the next few weeks so every suggestion is greatly appreciated and taken into consideration. I may be emailing you to find some great places in Gettysburg as well!

Thank you all so much, I have found out more information in the last 24 hours than my hubby has gotten since he found out about the job.

  • Harrisburg isn't the "city" that you are thinking like Miami or Tampa or anything it is really small and while it has its charm I think Gettysburg has tons more! They have great restaurants and shopping and tons of history. Harrisburg has the capital and they do have really cool summer fairs and stuff, but Gettysburg has that also. Harrisburg has some nice bars and restaurants on 2nd street, but it is a huge flip (during the day and early evening it is all politicos and then at night it is a much younger crowd).

A plus for your husband would be a reverse commute - in the morning everyone is coming into Harrisburg and he would be going out!

My advice would be if you can come here for a long weekend spend like Friday and Saturday morning in Harrisburg and then go to Gettysburg and spend the rest of Saturday and Sunday morning there just to get a good feel for the day and night life!

  • Since he will be working in Gettysburg, I'd stick closer to that area. It looks like some other girls have that covered for you.

If you decide you really want to live closer to Harrisburg, I'd look around Dillsburg or Mechanicsburg so that he would have easy access to Route 15.  Otherwise, he'd be stuck on the 581 interchange every day, at least until the construction crews figure out how to get you between 581 and 15 more easily.  It's not pretty at all right now.

Also, I've heard AirTran offers decent for flight prices (direct) between Harrisburg and Orlando.

  • Thank you all so much; I feel so ignorant about the area, and as I said I have no idea what I'm getting myself into haha.

We are coming up to visit the last weekend of May, which only gives us those 3 days to find something and sign a lease and then move up 3 weeks later. There are obviously other factors that go into where we live, but right now DH is the one with the job.

I have heard that living in Gettysburg is more expensive than in Harrisburg or it's suburbs...is this true? What are some nice areas around Gettysburg?

    Thanks again!
