Educate me about recycling.

What can and can't we recycle with city pickup? Bonus points if you know rules specific to Leander!

We usually toss in paper type stuff - magazines, newspaper, junk mail, etc. DH tosses in his beer cans. The bare basics.

I'm wondering what the rules are on plastics though - milk cartons, dishwasher soap bottles, etc? Cardboard? Glass - certain glass ok or all glass?

Thanks!

(I tried looking on the city website for any info and couldn't find anything.)

Re: Educate me about recycling.

  • I'm convinced they don't pick up anything other than glass/aluminum and the occassional newspaper.

but we do throw the plastic milk cartons in there and they don't reject them, so maybe they do take certain plastics?

  • found this on a non-city site... not sure if its accurate or not:

    Leander

    • Utility billing department: 259-1142, www.leandertx.org
    • Al Clawson Disposal Inc., 259-1709, www.clawsondisp.com
    • About: Al Clawson Disposal Inc. provides solid waste and recycling services. Recycling is collected on the same day as garbage; collection days vary by neighborhood.
    • Accepts: Clean and dry clear, brown and green glass, tin and aluminum cans, dry newspaper and plastics No.1-7, except the very thin plastic containers in which berries are often packaged
    • Charges: $13.26 per month for garbage and recycling collection.
  • If you call Al Clawson, they will mail you a list of items they pick up. The plastic has a certain number on the bottom and that's what they go by I think it was 3 and 9. They do pick up glass, new paper, but have rejected magazines in the past, with milk and egg cartons they usually throw it back in the trash or sometimes leave it in the bin.
  • I bookmarked this a while back.  It's a pretty interesting article about the challenges of plastics recycling.
