S/O: Vegas

In the Vacation poll, many people commented on how they enjoyed Vegas or were looking forward to going there.  My brother lives out there and to be honest DH and I dread going to see him since we don't "get" Vegas.  Our last visit we were on the strip (without a car) and realized we were too cheap for most of the shows, and otherwise there just didn't seem to be much that interests us (gambling, drinking, etc.).  So I'm looking forward to hearing what we are missing out on!

What activities were your favorites or you are looking forward to doing?

What activities did you do (or are going to do) that were low cost or even free?

Where are did you stay (or hope to stay)?  Are there any special perks for this place?

Are there any other Vegas tips?

Re: S/O: Vegas

  • Honestly, I loved just walking around and seeing everything, which can take a ton of time and is free!  =)  I'm a big sightseer, and really enjoy just walking around and seeing things whenever I'm in a new place.

I'm cheap, and not a gambler, but I did play some of the cheap blackjack slots every now and then to get free drinks (just paid a tip!)

We did see one show (Cirque) which was awesome.

We also took the monorail (rather than cab) to get around the strip - you can buy a pass for pretty cheap.

It's not a place I could go to on a regular basis, but I definitely want to go back in a few years, since it's always changing and there will be more to see!

  • We lived there for 2 years & hated it, but still had a good time being tourists for a few days recently. Then again, we like to drink, gamble and go to shows.  :-) Check out cheapovegas.com

I think part of the problem was that we were stuck on the strip for over 4 days.  It was just too long.  We didn't get a rental car and my brother only had a 2 seater, so he couldn't drive us anywhere.  I think next time we'll either stay for a shorter period of time or go visit Hoover Dam.  But thanks for the website, I'll have to check that out!

  • I'd love to go for a week and drive to the Grand Canyon for a few days, but I doubt we'll have time for that so we'll probably just hit the strip. I've heard the Hoover Dam was an underwhelming experience.
  • Hey Elissaann--I'm kind of like you.  The annual convention for my profession is always held in Vegas and well...if it weren't for the stuff going on during the day (convention related, I mean), I think I'd probably be bored to tears if I had to stay there without transportation for several days.  I too don't like to spend a lot of money on silly things (we/I don't gamble, I'm not  into the "hype" of a celebrity restaurants, i don't dream of owning LV purses, etc etc) and yes, I price checked--even the Walgreens is about 30-50% higher than usual on the strip.  Dh tends to feel the same way about Vegas so we'll really only go when work makes us go.  I don't mind the people watching and seeing the new displays at places like Bellagio, and this trip out, because of the economy we actually got FREE tickets to a show, but really, it's not on my list of places to visit.

Edited to add:  i too would love to go see the Grand Canyon, but I also imagine, with my outdoorsy interests that I would prefer to schedule a trip exclusively to the GC and not tack it onto a trip to LV.

Oh, and to actually answer your question:  My last (business) trip to LV we stayed at Paris and did really like that hotel.  My room was comfortable--they gave us enough pillows, which is always a pet peeve of mine.  The restaurants inside Paris offered enough variety that I could at least swallow the "LV Strip mark up" and not be crying--ie, at least the muffins seemed to be freshly baked for $3 (instead of one of the pre-packaged, mass produced ones other places sell).

  • Derky- this is exactly how we feel.  But since my brother lives out there and works at Cesear's, we feel obligated to head out there every once and a while.  Since we practically stay for free, it feels like a free vacation that we don't really want.  That's weird to say, but it is how we feel.  I think next time I want to explore more casinos, just to see the sights, and maybe we will visit LA for a few days as well.
