Vacation spot recommendations??

Hola everyone. I feel like a terrible mascot because I haven't been around, but I do need some assistance from the fine inhabitants of the board.

Jamie finally gets a paid week vacation this year (I've always had one), and I need some ideas.  We don't want to go to the beach or anything typical of the summer. I'm thinking historic type town and something just relaxing with minimal hustle and bustle. We will probably take off on a Friday and come back the next Saturday.

Aaaaaand, geaux!

Re: Vacation spot recommendations??

  • When are you looking to go? Do you want to drive or fly? I personally would get bored in a minimal hustle and bustle for 9 days, but that's me. I understand sometimes it's nice to just get out of town and out of the routinue.

I want to fly, but if we find a place that we want close enough, we would drive. End of June, beginning of July. I just want to relax, site-see, and eat good food.

  • How about coastal Maine? There are a lot of quaint towns there, you should be able to get a shuttle from the airport and not even need a car the whole time. ya'll are also welcome to come here and stay, fly into Philly, that's pretty historic! From Philly you are (by car) 90 miles from NYC, 90 miles from baltimore, 120 miles from DC. There is also Skyline Drive in VA that is a lot more chill. Not sure that the latter is what you are looking for though.

Normally I would suggest Charleston, but the weather is just like BR that time of year and it's tourist central so that's not really my idea of the best time of year.

The other option is to go west to Sonoma/Napa, fly in and out of San Fran.

We are doing this for the honeymoon (Thanks, Shoe). Jamie has family in San Francisco.

  • We had a lot of fun exploring San Antonio. There's history there, great food, some shopping, Sea World, etc. :) It's also driving distance (8 hrs.)

We went during the Riverwalk Arts/Crafts Festival too and there were so many interesting booths/art types to look at. I love the Riverwalk cruise too....way awesome way to be lazy and sight see. :)

  • We love, love, love Eureka Springs, AR.  It's about a 10 hour drive from here, so you can drive or fly.  It's beautiful.  We stay just outside of the town on Beaver Lake.  Breathtaking, I tell you.  The town is like a little Victorian village ---- so many cute shops, galleries, and restaurants.  You can also canoe, ride horses, and rent boats.  We were married there and visit twice a year.

  • Williamsburg, VA was a lot of fun. Very pretty, historical and it didn't have the hustle and bustle you are trying to avoid.

ETA: Like MT said coastal Maine is also gorgeous. Kennebunkport is right on the water and also a small town. Very laid back, you can walk everywhere. I *think* there are pictures on my Facebook but if not I can send you some if you'd like :)

That's a GREAT suggestion!! Williamsburg is beautiful and they have some lovely B&B's there as well as mainstream hotels. You have to fly into richmond and rent a car, but that's super simple. From Williamsburg, you can go to Richmond (45 mintues away) and Yorktown (15 minutes). Lots of cute shops and restaurants too.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies. All of them sound great. It looks like we won't be able to go until August, though. I will definately look up all the websites y'all posted and report back. You are all awesomeness.
