D&RR: Window Treatment help

I have a 95" window and a 43" window in the LR. My original plan was to do bamboo shades and then have the white sheers to the sides. Problem is because of my irregular size windows, shades alone will be put me close to $200 for just this room. No bueno.

Other options:

1. Pair or replace sheers with darker thicker curtains

2. 2" white faux wood blinds (have them in other side of the house)

3. 2" brown faux wood blinds

4. Cram in 2 48" bamboo shades in the big window and nothing with the smaller window?

5. Other

Re: D&RR: Window Treatment help

  • Personally, I'd go with option 1 and pair a thicker curtain with the sheers. Here are my reasons:

    1) I like the look of curtains better than blinds

    2) I like the option of pushing all the fabric to the side so it still lends a decorative element to the room while letting all the light from outside in

    3) You can change curtains like you change throw pillows -- it's an easy (and cheap!) "redo" to give a room a facelift if you get bored with the look. Blinds don't have as much flexibility

    4) I think it will look more balanced.

    5) They always take out the blinds on the shows on HGTV and replace them with curtains, so clearly, it's the better choice.

  • I agree with SBS.

I'm not crazy about blinds but if you're going to do them, wait until you can do them justice.  Cramming in the wrong size just to have them will look far worse than a nice curtain.

  • I like the curtain idea too... I'd probably replace the sheers with a darker curtain. Maybe pick up on a more colorful accent in your room, since it looks like you already have a lot of neutrals in the carpet, couches and walls.

  • Curtains pretty unanimous? Admittedly it's easier for me since I don't have to measure and mount.  You can't really tell from the pic, but on the bigger couch are a set of plum throw pillows and plum/purple throw blanket. With the help of my craftier bff, I may make some curtains from a cute plum printed fabric.

I just had my heart set on bamboo and sheers a la YHL. :(

  • I'm not a huge fan of curtains...but they are wonderful for blocking out the sun in bedrooms!  I like 2" white wood (or faux wood) blinds everywhere when there are white frames around the windows.  That's how my entire house is and I feel like it is much more modern than darker blinds (that I feel like don't match the frames and look weird) or curtains.  Although, I have to say we have been considering curtains for our bedroom on top of our blinds, because we get the rising sun there bright and early every morning!

ETA: Good place to buy blinds is here: http://www.americanblinds.com/ -- My dad checked a lot of places when I had to furnish my whole place with blinds and they were the best deal he could find at the time.

  • Thanks, all!
