Little Miami Schools question

I know that there's a big mess up there right now with the tax situation and threats of state takeovers...anyone have the latest update? Is it on the ballot again for next week? Google is not being friendly with me today & I can't find any current info.

DH is currently obsessed with a house in this district (we'll be moving this summer), but I'm leery about the possible tax increases and what a state takeover could mean for the schools (and our potential children who would attend those schools).

Re: Little Miami Schools question

  • OK, so I got Google to cooperate and read up on the latest news ... does anyone who lives up there have thoughts they'd like to share? General sentiments in the area? What the schools are like now?

  • I don't have any current information on the Little Miami situation but there is a Nestie who lives in that district but for the life of me can't remember who it is. Hopefully she will chime in here.

Personally, I think it's important to buy a home in a reputable district because it helps protect your home value and because even if the school quality is not important to you (royal you, not you in particular) chances are it will be important to any person who buys your home after you.  So for resale I feel it is important to be in a good district. I know others disagree but that's my .02.

There was a house that absolutely spoke to my soul when we were looking. I had such a wonderful feeling whenever I walked through it.  It is the floor plan I was meant to live in.  I don't live in it. We didn't buy it.  It was not in the right location. I don't for a moment regret passing on that house. It is not the right house if it's not in the right location, imo.

  • I do know they have removed specials classes(art, gym, music) from the elementary level. It is now the responsibility of the general classroom teacher to incorporate those things into the curriculum. I think it's a shame. :(

This really is a shame... DH and I were talking last night about the importance of music in a child's development, and what we each learned through our various music classes in school. I'd hate for our potential child(ren) to miss out on that. Not that we couldn't offer music at home & through non-school programs... but it's still an issue. Of course, we aren't even TTC yet, so by time our potential child(ren) was in school, this could all be fixed... but that's a big "if"

  • We have friends who live up there.  They're going to send their oldest to Catholic HS next year if the levy does not pass & thinking of sending the younger kids to private gradeschool.  They might even give up on the SD if it passes.  I would not move there if the levy fails again.  We live in one of the worst SD in Ohio.  I didn't see kids in the future when I bought so I really didn't care about the schools.  I can say that a bad SD really drives down the value of your home & makes resale hard.

I'm thinking the whole levy situation is part of why we may be able to get a good deal on this house...it's listed way out of our price range, but given the condition of the housing market in general, plus the schools/levy, there's no way it's going to sell for list price--they've had it at that price for 10 months already and nothing's moving. BUT, that doesn't mean it's really a great deal, esp. if we end up having to pay for private school for any potential children.

  • The topic has come up on this board before and from what I can remember there are a few of us in the Little Miami school district.  I think the Nestie that has a lot more information that me is "FutureMrsShawty".

I've been here almost 10 years and my stepson is in 2nd grade.  It's really quite sad and I know it will be nearly impossible to sell anytime in the near future.

I vote for the levy every single time it's on the ballot because of Conner. I can understand the people that can't afford the extra taxes but there are those who are flat-out against it because they believe the school board is responsible for the situation.  I honestly don't know if that's true either way but if Conner was in junior high or high school, we'd be having a serious talk with his mom and stepdad about his schooling.  At his age, it's important but it's not really a HUGE deal, although it hurts my soul that they don't have art, music, etc

  • The situation in LM schools is sad, but the truth is no school district is immune to the issues.  The only difference is Little Miami has been dealing with it for a longer period of time.  I know a lot of people who have lived (or do live) in Little Miami.  Those with school aged children are seeking out other options.  My teacher friends are probably going to take their kids to the districts they teach in.

The district is broke.  If the state takes over, it will mean state minimums which means what do students need to meet the minimum requirements of Ohio's school curriculums.  No extras, no AP classes, maximum class sizes, minimum pay for teachers, etc...  Naturally, the morale there is low.

The quality of the school district has a huge impact on property values.   So, should the state takeover, the values of homes will continue to decrease.  You can get an amazing deal on a house there right now, but it will be near impossible to sell anytime soon.  IMO, it will take a long time to recover from a takeover (10 years??  longer???).  Because once the state takes over, the district has to prove that they can stay in the black for a lengthy period of time.  That's not going to happen overnight.  And then they'll have to rebuild their staff, programs, etc...  That's also going to take some time.  If you're thinking about kids in the future, I'd look elsewhere.  You might get a great deal on a house, but I think a poor performing school district has a huge impact on the morale & quality of life in the community too.
