Good areas near Greensboro

Hello,

We will be moving to Greensboro for my husband's job - we have never been and are not familiar with the area at all.  We are looking for a nice area to live with good school systems, low tax rates, family friendly activities..........

Any suggestions would be welcome.  My husband thought that Oak Ridge and Summerfield both had good ratings for their school systems....

Re: Good areas near Greensboro

  • First, welcome to the area! It's definitely a very nice, family friendly city.

We just moved to High Point (10 miles outside of Greensboro) about 6 months ago and I don't have children, but I do work for an organization that works closely with schools in Randolph County (which borders Greensboro which is Guilford County). Schools in Archdale and Trinity are very good. These cities are in Randolph County, but a short commute from Greensboro and taxes are much cheaper than in Guilford County (Guilford's taxes are about double). These two particular cities do have higher taxes than the rest of Randolph County, but it is only because they have an additional education tax (thus the better schools). Also in Randolph Co., I believe that Level Cross Elementary is a very good school, but I am not sure about the quality of the high school it feeds into.

In Guilford County, I hear that the schools in Elon (north of Greensboro) are good. Also, I believe Kernersville (Forsyth County - halfway between Winston-Salem and Greensboro) has a good school system, but I am unsure of the taxes in that Forsyth Co.

Hope this helps! If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask.

  • I do not know much about the school system since we do not have kids, but there are some nice neighborhoods in NW Greensboro. I would  try to come before you need to move and drive around a bit.

Oak Ridge and Summerfield are a little bit further out. Do you want to live in Greensboro, or just Guildford county?

  • Thank you for the reply, we are not sure where we want to be but it sounds like the taxes are much higher in Guilford county........something to consider.

Any information is helpful.  Thank you.

Where are you moving from because the cost of living may be a lot cheaper than where you are coming from.  When they say higher in Guilford County, its because there are different areas that are right outside of guilford county that you can get to in a short time that are cheaper..Greensboro/Guilford County is not a HCOL area, but it is higher compared to the previous post of Archdale, Trinity, Kernersville and other smaller locations around..We don't have any kids, but when I lived in Greensboro, I lived over near the Battleground/Pisgah Church area and liked it.. We moved to High Point which is 10 mins outside of the city limits of Greensboro a little while back for the closer commute to work for me and housing..

  • Taxes also depends on whether you simply paying guilford county taxes or county plus greensboro city. Same with Forsyth. Many of the areas are outside city limits and you only pay county taxes so its not as bad. The guilford/forsyth line is the edge of my property. My address is High Point (guilford) but I'm actually in Forsyth County so I have all the conveniences of High Point and Greensboro cities within a few minute drive but I pay county taxes for forsyth because I'm at the far reaches of the county, no where close to the city of Winston.

The school systems in my opinion are not that great though once you hit middle schools.

Are you working with a realtor?  He/she should be able to give you the latest on the school rankings/ratings.  Oak Ridge and Summerfield also incorporate many fewer children than the regular Greensboro or High Point public school system since they are much further out from the center of town.  There are more and more houses becoming available in those areas because, well, those were the least developed to begin with.  I don't think those areas have all that many "community" events only because although they are their own towns technically, there's not much gathering space.  There's no natural "downtown" the way GSO and HP (to a much smaller degree) have.  All of the people I work with/for that live in Oak Ridge or Summerfield send their kids to private school, so I'm not really sure if that is a good indicator for their schools or not.

I agree with Curbside in that the only way to really get a feel for the area is to come down and visit.  What I like is probably different than what Curbside likes, which is probably different than what Buckin likes, which is probably different than what MrsCapricorn likes.  I'm a little frustrated that this is probably your 6th post or so with very general questions and still don't seem to have any kind of direction.  Have you looked at any of the sites we've recommended before?  Gotten feedback from area Realtors?

  • we have been in greensboro for 12 yrs. back and forth to DC. the guilford county school system is not one i would recommend. If you can afford it, go for  Greensboro Day School or Weselyn. If that isn't an option try to look for areas in the NW area. I have taught in the SE and SW area You do not want that area in SE. SW has a public school off of skeet Club rd that is public and caters to high income families.

Guilford County taxes are high as heck and they go up every year. There is a little community called Whitsett near ext. 135 that is fabulous. Nice homes and small. Take a ride out there and I promise you will like it. Greensboro Day School sends a bus that far to the school.

  • Excellent information, thank you.  We are hoping to make a trip down - my DH is expecting his formal offer letter by the middle of next week.  We will then take a look at the areas that have been recommended.  There is alot of information online but when you have never been to an area it is nice to get feedback from those who actually live/work there.

     Thank you.
