10 minutes after I arrived at work yesterday I heard the worst blood-curdling scream I have ever heard in my life. Then I saw a bunch of people running just to the left of where I could see from the front window of my work. I heard a lady scream "arrest her!!" and then my co-worker G and my other co-worker J ran out to see what they could do to help.
It turned out that a pit bull without a leash got loose from her owners grasp and ran over to a lady walking on the street and grabbed her maltese and started tearing it to shreads.
G grabbed the pit and was able to grab the maltese out of the pits mouth and J put a leash around the pit. As this all happened the owner of the pit fled the scene but not before one of the neighbors was able to get a pictures of her face, her car, and her licence plate (the power of the iphone!).
Thank goodness I work at a veterinary clinic! The maltese was brought inside and immediately a doctor was able to look at her, bandage her up and get her on pain drugs. The pit was put in a kennel and we called Animal Care and Control to pick her up.
Because the owner of the pit fled the scene she will be charged with a "bite and run" which is a felony (not sure if that is a state wide thing or just a San Francisco thing) and because she refused to take any responsibility the dog had to be euthinized.
The maltese had surgery to close up huge gashes and was sent to ER overnight to be monitered. The doctor thinks she will be ok but she will definitely be monitered very closely over the next few days.
All in all a very scary day. I'm just hoping I get to work today and hear good news about the little maltese.
Re: scary day at work yesterday
Oh, that breaks my heart. My in-laws have a maltese that they love like a baby. They would be destroyed if something happen to her.
These irresponsible pet owners make me so angry. WTH people, this is why it's important to train your dog. I hope the attacking dog's owner is punished.
Oh My God!
That is horrible. What an irresponsible person - to run away like that while HER animal was trying to kill another.
I hope the little one is OK and I do feel bad that the pit had to be put down.

They are. Kyle is 4 and is now terrified of his own two dogs because of what that strange dog did to him. He almost lost his eye and the whole left side of his face will forever be scarred. Now I am not a pit hater by any means but to me, owning any animal that has such a reputation needs to be taken seriously. ughghgh this makes me angry. sorry.
OMG! Both situations are so horrible and so sad
How scary for that poor lady and her baby. I hope the maltese is going to be ok.
Last year I was walking Sam and passed a guy walking his pit. His dog pulled loose and came after Sam. The guy just freaked out and kept saying he didn't know what to do. My Sam is not a fighter and just shyed from the dog. Fortunately all turned out ok and Sam or I weren't hurt but the guy didn't even say he was sorry or ask if Sam was ok.
If you can't control your dog you shouldn't own it. Imagine these kind of people also reproduce....heaven help their children.
This exactly! There are so many cases of dogs who come in that were bit/attacked by other dogs and the owner of the dog that was the attacker never apologizes and doesn't want to help pay for vet costs.
One of my first thoughts was this poor lady is going to have to foot the bill for this and I can only imagine how expensive it will be with surgery, medicines, Er visits and follow up care.
Yep, I already know that yesterday alone was around $2,000.
That is awful. I love pits and think that they get a bad rap but seriously if you can't control your dog you have no business owning one, especially ones that are so strong. We have a large dog fighting ring around us and any dog that is taken into custody regardless if they are a bait dog or not are euthanized to make an attempt to minimalize any attacks like this.
I also hope the lady who owns the maltese sues the other lady for vet bills and all her legal fees.
K - What a rough road ahead of him but I hope with time your nephew heals both mentally and physically.
thats just soooo terrible. If a person has to take a dog they cant control in public, at least put a muzzle on it so if it does break loose the damage wont be as bad.
And Karrey that is soooo sad. Poor little guy
We had a dog in ladmos class that had to wear a muzzle...they dont come to class anymore.
How awful! Hope the maltese will be okay! And so sad the other one has to be put down. I can't stand irresponsible pet owners!
Karrey - your poor nephew! I hope he's okay.
This just makes me livid. I am so sorry to hear about both situations! Just terrible.
I would fully support a law that would require owners of dogs who are capable of being (abused, neglected and trained to be) vicious to have to pass training courses and take the dog to obediance school.
I wish our dog had this training, not that he's vicious. He just pulls on the leash, which drives me batty.
