How are the gardens growing?
Hello,
I was just wondering how the other NM gardens are doing.
My tomato plants are about 2' tall and my cucumbers are blooming. I also have some radishes and carrots growing outside, I know I'm late, but I'm planting peas and lettuce this weekend. I don't have to many flowers blooming, but I hope that it won't be long.

Re: How are the gardens growing?
I was wondering how your garden was doing up in White Rock.
My plants are doing well - especially sinc ewe were gone for 10 days to Spain and no one watered them.
My vegetable garden is doing well. I lost my first round of seedling transplants back in April - I put them out before that big cool-off we had. But round 2 is going like gangbusters. My tomatoes are 2 feet tall and blooming - so I figure I'm a month away from fresh garden 'maters. The bell pepers are about a foot high and blooming. My pumpkins started putting out runners - they're still starting since I just plant those directly into the ground. Ditto for my cucumbers. The herb patch has something growing in. I did a hand broadcast of oregeno, marjoram and basil seeds in a 2 ft square area. There's a bunch of green sprouts, but not enough for me to know which green thing is what.
My lavendar hedge is going nuts. While we were gone all 6 plants put out flower spikes. They're not fully blooming yet, but they're so big that you brush up agianst them walking into the house. Which is rather nice because of the fragrance. The rosemary and thyme also are doing well.
My front yard went nuts while I was gone. The prickly pear is in full bloom - I lost count after 50. As are my barrrel cacti and claret cups. The ice plants (ground cover in the front xericscape) all bloomed their various purples. The salvia are doing well (purple, pink, and blue) . The real impressive flower is my sea of penstemons. We came back from Spain and I have 4 ft high bright pink flowers all over the front yard. The hummers, butterflies and bees are having a field day. I expect the desert willow to bloom sometime this week. Before I left I reipped out some gravel and planted some hummingbird mints. They're still alive and growing, but no blooms yet. DItto for the bee balm. All I need is the desert willow to bloom and the front yard and walkway will look like a color explosion.
What elevation are you at. Most of my co-workers up in Santa Fe just transplanted their tomatoes so I was wondering when you put your in.....
I really enjoy seeing the wild cacti blooming, but I have never seen so many in one place. It must be nice to come home and see it every day. Don't forget to take pictures to look at all winter.
Do you use all the veggies from your garden yourself, or so you share with friends and coworkers?
I'm not exactly sure what elevation we are at, higher than most of White Rock, but lower than Los Alamos, so maybe 6700-6800ft?
My tomatoes are in the sunporch, so have been out there for a while. The radishs and carrots I planted outside about 3 weeks ago, they are hardier though. We had some serious temperature swings this spring, so I don't blame your coworkers for waiting to put their plants out
I do love seeing everything blooming. There is something about the last thing I see before I go to work and the first thing I see when I get home is all the flowers and blooms. Our front yard is becoming a neighborhood hang out. All the kids in the area stop to see the flowers. Plus, I told most of the parents the munchkins can pick any flowers they want. Plus, everyone stops when I'm out front weeding, pruning, etc.
I share my veggies with the folks at work. There are 5 of us who are pretty avid gardeners. My boss and I supply our entire division with pumpkins in the fall. I'm the tomato and cucumber queen, plus all the herbs, He grows more lettuce, squash, zucchini that he brings in. One of our IT guys every form of green leafy vegetable taht he shares - kale, lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, etc. And our bureau chief grows tons of peppers.
Got anything fun planned for teh Memorial Day weekend?
We are looking at doing a cruise in Europe, hopefully this fall, but maybe not until next spring....
It sounds like you live in a nice neighborhood with lots of friendly neighbors.
That is nice that you and your coworkers trade veggies. My coworkers told me to bring some in, but I don't think they are growing anything
I went down to Abq with a friend yesterday for the Fiber Arts Fiesta. There were some really pretty quilts there as well as people doing demonstrations of weaving and other needle arts.
Nothing else to exciting this weekend, DH has been playing in a bridge tournament, so I've mostly just been hanging around the house.
We try to travel a good bit. Usually one big trip every year (10 days - 18 days) and several smaller long weekend trips. It's only been in the last 2 years where we both have sufficient vacation and money to start taking the trips to Europe and overseas.
A cruise in Europe sounds wonderful. Are you looking at teh cruises in the the Med, or one of the Danube or other river cruises?
How was the Fiber Arts Fiesta. I wanted to try to make it, but we had already made other plans with people. Do you quilt? I never got into quilting, but I knit and crochet and used to do a lot of sewing (mostly for costume design, decorations, etc.)
The cruise I have my eye on right now is Princess, going from Barcelona to Venice with other stops stops in France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. I feel like the cruise prices are pretty reasonable, it is the flights that I'm finding crazy, any hints for that?
The Fiesta was interesting, we stayed for about 2 hours. I've started doing some quilting recently, I finished putting together the top for a queen size, I just need to get the backing and I guess send it out for quilting, since I don't have the machine to do that
I still haven't made it to Bacelona - it's on my list. Venice is Wonderful. And you'll probably stop in Napoli or Genova in Italy, too. I really love Genova - it's not amazingly touristy and has a college town feel. The cruise sounds wonderful.
Thanks for the airfare tips, I hadn't thought about doing that, I'll definately look into it.
I'm hoping we can do some camping around the state this year. We finally bought a tent last year, and did a test at Bandelier with the dogs (we figured we could drive home in the middle of the night if they were loud), they were good, but I hurt my knee shortly after, and I couldn't do much in the fall.
Do you plan your road trips ahead of time, or just go?
These days we plan ahead of time. Mostly because I work Sat mornings for a family friend so I need ot tell her I won't be working. If we're doing a long weekend with camping, we often decide in the car where we want to go. If it's a city long weekend we'll actually make hotel reservation a month ahead of time.
If you are looking for places the dogs can enjoy, I would recommend Iron Springs campground in the Pecos and some of the Forest Service spots south of McCarthy (almost on the Zuni Pueblo) or out near Magdelena.
