Preggo Rant, ugh!

So ladies, I'm now just a few days shy of eight months along and I'm looking big as a house, and let's not even discuss my swollen feet and ankles which mirror Eddie Murphy's character of Professor Klump! Oh yes, they've been in a perpetual state puffiness so much that when I showed one of my co-workers who recently had a baby, she gasped that I must be baking bread in my shoes! (There will be no pics of the feet)! LOL.

But, I had to vent that aside from those pregnancy indignities courtesy of my "sweet pea"--when I ventured out to shop for some comfy maxi dresses (my spring/summer staple while pregnant), I ended up receiving my first unintended rude comment. An elderly sales lady remarked how much she liked the maxi dress I was wearing, after I exclaimed I was exhausted from trying to find cute dresses that fit. She then asked me when I was due (I replied the end of June) she then asks: "are you having twins?" LOL. I didn't know whether to feel mortified or angry, but I quickly retorted, "No, just a healthy baby girl!" I think she felt bad enough, since she  told me to take it easy and be careful!

But, seriously, why are people so quick to speak before they think to pregnant women?! When you mix in all our hormones, sensitivity, swollen feet and ankles (darn near cankles), into one, that's a ticking time bomb! At almost 32 weeks now, I'm counting down the days!

I do have some pics ladies posted on my website: www.totsites.com/tot/babywhyte Because I'm so bad at getting pics to upload in my siggy. There you can take a look at all my swollen glory! LOL. Boy will my baby girl one day hear all about what mommy went through for her!

Re: Preggo Rant, ugh!

  • I have been getting asked if I am having twins since I started showing at 12 weeks.  I hate people.  Super Angry

  • That sucks, I hate rude people! I'm sorry that lady was so insensitive to you, you look great though. Hang in there, baby girl will get here; I know the last few weeks suck.
  • For reasons that defy me, people totally lose the social and personal space barriers that they should normally exercise when they are around pregnant women.  At least once a week at work I get a "You're HUGE" or "any day now, huh? (um no a-hole, 3 more months), then followed by a WOW, you're HUGE"  Get the twins comment regularly and have had people argue with me about it.  And, plenty of analysis of my shape, size, gait, weight gain in other areas, and so on.  Comments that would COMPLETELY be out of place and insulting for a non pregnant person, so WHY on earth are they appropriate to say to me!  And this is MOSTLY in the workplace!  Let's not even get Started about the BELLY touching!  Touching someone at work, anywhere other than maybe a pat on the shoulder or back can get you fired!  How does that translate to a pregnant midsection free-for all?  I feel like everyone needs re-training.  You know all of that sexual harassment training and hostile workplace stuff that everyone has to learn?  Um those rules still apply to pregnancy!

THe one thing I do appreciate, is that because this phenomenon is SOOO transforming, simply the shock of seeing you look so different pushes people out of line.  I'm trying to work with the thought that I usually look so great and lean when I'm not pregnant, that this is just overwhelmingly surprising to folks and they are shocked into saying something stupid.  works for me.

The other thing I think is that when you are pregnant, you really are  literally wearing your heart on your sleeve.  You are revealing something intimate about yourself every moment just by your appearance (love, family, motherhood, the fact that you've clearly had sex at least once).  I think that revealed intimacy makes people think that they can join the party, and pitch the social barriers.

  • aaawww...your baby bump is so cute! I'm sorry people are inappropriate. Unfortunately, things will never change...there will always be someone with diarrhea of the mouth. =/

  • I am sorry, ladies! I think that some people just don't know what to say. But that's not an excuse!

  • you look great! tell anyone who says something stupid to suck it. ditto everything dnagal said. somehow people forget to think before they speak to pregnant women. at least you only have a handful of weeks of that crap and you get to meet your little girl soon!

  • Yup- I got the twins comment too, and I wasn't that big!  I was also told I looked like I was "ready to go any day" with 12 weeks left to go.  And this was from a woman who had had children.  you would think women who had had children would know better.  But they don't.  I was so shocked I just muttered at her.
  • Thanks for all the sympathy and empathy ladies! There should be an etiquette book on this material called: How not to be a dummy around pregnant women!
