If you could go to NYC in mid-May...
what would you do? I will be there for a weekend with DH, tacked on to the end of a business trip.
I am thinking at least one Broadway show, but which one?
And at least one nice dinner out, but where?

It does not need to be a dinner stop. They also have a great lunch.
I would go shopping: H&M, Filene's Basement, etc.
The last time I went to NYC, I got tickets to the Broadway show Putnam County Spelling Bee at TKTS. Yes, you have to wait in line, but it was fairly quick and easy.
Are you looking for fine dining or any ol' recs? I always want to go to the Shake Shack, but I've never been there "in season."
ETA: Other things I've done in NYC that I thought were fun include
-taking the subway over to Brooklyn, eating pizza, then walking back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge
-a boat tour that drove around the island (sorry, the name of the tour escapes me)
-cupcake tasting around the city

Ditto Craft, but if you want to get more for your money (still expensive by Texas standards but still amazing) I would go to craftbar. Same Tom Colicchio food, just more casual and less expensive. And ditto wd-50 as well. I went to Buddakhan a couple of weeks ago and... OMG. Amazing. Beautiful restaurant and beautiful food. Also loved momofuku ssam bar... easier to get in here than momofuku ko... another amazing menu. I liked Bond St for trendy sushi.
Shopping in Soho is probably your best bet if you're not there for too long. It's got a good variety of stuff that's affordable (H&M, Topshop), splurges, and stuff you'll just browse.
As far as shows, I've heard that Promises, Promises is great. I've seen and can recommend Next to Normal, Wicked, Avenue Q, and Spring Awakening (not sure if that one is still playing). Hit up the tkts booth in Times Square (or other locations) for cheap day-of tickets.
I think the Tim Burton special exhibit just ended at the MoMA but if not you should definitely check that out if you're a fan. I love the cafe there for lunch/snack time!
Oh, and be sure to check out Bergdorf Goodman! The couture is beautiful this time of year and they're having a spring sale coming up.

Another vote for a Tom Colicchio restaurant. I friend used to work at CraftSteak, so when we visited last year, he suggested we go in to HalfSteak, which is the bar in the front of the CraftSteak restaurant. Amazing apps, beer, wine...so you can get to taste the great food, but it's also more casual and less expensive.
These are great - keep em coming! We are probably staying with my cousin in Brooklyn and I will take any and all food recommendations!

Since you'll already be in Brooklyn, definitely check out Egg for breakfast...some of the best eggs and french toast I've ever had. When you order coffee, they give you your own French press. Also, go get a bloody mary at Teddy's Bar & Grill for brunch...I don't think anyone makes them better than Teddy's.
I'm drooling just thinking about all these places. And now I want to go back to visit my sister...

Tia Pol: Most amazing tapas restaurant ever. It's in Chelsea. My DH and I used to go there all.the.time. The fried chickpeas, artichoke salad, chorizo and chocolate, guernica peppers, and patatas bravas are must haves. http://www.tiapol.com/

I also second TKTS. I grew up just outside of NYC, and we used to go to the TKTS booth every few weeks to get tickets. You can get into some good shows, especially for a matinee. Just read over the NYT broadway reviews before you go and figure out 3-5 shows that you might want to see. The line moves pretty fast.
I second the Shake Shack. Tribeca Grill is also quite tasty and it is fun to get dessert at Chickalicious or Max Brenner.

i always buy my tickets at tkts. they have two locations in the city; check out their website. you can only buy the day of, but they are sooo much cheaper, and they still have a wide variety.

We saw A Behanding in Spokane and The Miracle Worker when we went in March. A Behanding in Spokane was hilarious, especially if you're a Christopher Walken fan. Miracle Worker was good, Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller was amazing. You probably couldn't go wrong with Promises, Promises either. For restaurants, we love Life Cafe, Vynl, and Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. Have a great trip!
