Good areas to buy homes in Fort Worth?

Hi, all!  I'm an old-timer Knottie (but just finally made it over here to the Nest, lol)...thought I'd ask you ladies for some tips as we start shopping for our next home.

DH and I are looking at moving to Fort Worth, but I have NO clue about what neighborhoods over there are "good", to speak generically.  We have 3 children, one of which will be going into 6th grade next year and another of which will be going into 2nd grade...baby #3 will still be in preschool for 2 more years.  Our budget is rather modest...$200,000 or less for a 4 bedroom home.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to find some good neighborhoods (with good schools)?

TIA!!

Re: Good areas to buy homes in Fort Worth?

  • Hi there! We live in Keller ISD and are actually looking to sell our home in the near future... it's not on the market officially, but we can move whenever. We would like to be closer to DH's job in Arlington. We love our house though. I would be happy to e-mail you some pictures of it, if you're interested.

It is a 4 bedroom, 2 story, 2 1/2 bath with a 3 car garage, large lot (.25 acre), granite countertops, hardwood floors in the formal dining, living and master bedroom-- we just installed these last month! Also, it has a game room upstairs for the kiddos. It is in the Crawford Farms housing addition close to Golden Triangle and Crawford Farms Dr.

  • I'm in the Keller area as well. It's a great area and the schools are wonderful. There are certainly some areas over $200k, but there are plenty well under. There is a lot of new construction as well, which means you can usually get more house for your money than an older home. Most of the new development is north of Golden Triangle/1709 and between I-35 and Denton Hwy/377.

  • I'm on the south side of FW in Benbrook. We just moved here, but we love it so far and our friends that've lived here for several years all rave about it constantly.

Prior to the move, we lived in Saginaw which is north/west. We adored that area as well

  • I grew up in SW Fort Worth (Crowley ISD) and we are currently trying to move back to that area as well. Crowley has decent schools(way better than Fort Worth, ISD). You can get a great home for $200,000 in the Summer Creek Ranch area which has a community pool with waterslides :) If you have any questions feel free to email me... meagan.lewis@coldwellbanker.com
  • Another vote for Keller, we are so far north in Keller we are actually in the Northwest ISD which I think is better than Keller ISD but I work in Keller ISD and from what I have seen and experienced Keller ISD is great!

we live in Summer Creek Ranch and it is very nice.  There are tons of other nice areas though...  I think it would all depend on where you will be working.  Look at the traffic, what you want to be near, etc.

I do wish we had done a bit more research...   I would have looked at some of the older homes near TCU or Central Market...  although affording them would have been a bit more challenging.

I also would have looked more in Mansfield, as we do a lot of traveling to Houston and that half an hour makes a HUGE difference.

Look at Keller, N Richland Hills, Mansfield.

  • Definitely has a lot to do with where you'll be driving to work!

Fort Worth / and surrounding areas are not tiny and it wouldn't be hard to end up with an hour + commute.

I have grown up and still live in NE Tarrant County (considered the mid-cities) and love it.  Cities are North Richland Hills, Keller, Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine, Hurst, Bedford- all good places to live. I live in NRH and my commute to downtown ft worth every morning is 15 min or less.  I like living a bit north because it seems to be more center in the metroplex.  It's a pretty easy drive to anywhere in DFW, north south east or west.

Good luck!  Let us know if you have more questions.

  • Another vote for Keller/North Ft. Worth.  There are a ton of new family friendly neighborhoods in this area.  You might want to look into Woodland Springs.  They have a large selection of homes from various builders in all budget ranges.  Keller ISD is also a really great school district.
  • Yet another vote for Keller/North Fort Worth area.

There is actually a house on sale on my street. It's been on SALE forever, but it's a nice big house. Just search 76131 area code and you'll find a ton of houses in your price range. I don't have little ones yet, so I'm not sure what school district. But there a ton of kids in the area.

  • It really depends on what lifestyle you want. I would not live in N Ft Worth (Keller/Southlake/Haslet/etc) because I want to be near the culture of FW. It's completely different to live in the northern 'burbs than in Ft Worth. Most of our friends in that area are looking to move south and into Ft Worth proper. Fairmount, Ridglea Hills, Mistletoe Heights, Berkley Place, etc are all popular neighborhoods with good schools. You really have to watch the schools in FW. I have another friend that is selling her home in W Ft Worth to get into Pascal HS area. They are looking at Fairmount as it's more affordable than Mistletoe Heights.

If that is out of your price range, but you want to actually be in Fort Worth, you can head to S Ft Worth to the Benbrook and S Hulen area and be in decent schools or a little further south and in Crowley ISD, which is also decent. all those areas will be an easy skip to downtown FW.

My dream location would be the 7th st area near Montgomery Plaza. Amazing location and great spot for dining, shopping, and entertainment. But it comes with a price =)

Also see where you work and the commute - a friend of mine lives in NRH but works in downtown FW, as does her hubby, go to church in downtown FW, and do all the shopping/restaurants there. They are looking to sell and move to the 7th st area. They spend too much time on 121 =)

I was born and bred in Dallas and think Ft Worth is an amazing place to live. The culture here is something other cities can't even touch. Museums, festivals, great established neighborhoods, local restaurants, great downtown nightlife, etc.
