Does anyone know anything about these bcp's?
I was jsut wondering if anyone can tell me anything about these two bcp's:
1. Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
2. Jolivette or "Mini- Pill"
I'm currently taking Jolivette and hate it. I've done some research on it and found a list of side-effects and stuff, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experience with it. I'm thinking about convincing my doctor to switch me to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, but I want to know more about it. I need a pill that's really low on estrogen according to my gyn and the ONLY option he gave me was Jolivette and I am so fed up and unhappy with it... so I'm researching!
Thanks!
Re: Does anyone know anything about these bcp's?
I've been on Ortho-Lo for several years and never had any problems with it....
(I never had problems with estrogen though, so I'm not sure if I'm much help!)

Ortho-Lo is a combination bcp, so it will have estrogen in it. Jolivette has only progestin. If you need a pill that is low on estrogen, Ortho-Lo (and other low-estrogen options) would fit the bill.
The Jolivette has no estrogen in it, so if you need only progestin options, the Implanon or the Depo-Provera might work. Mirena IUD is also only progestin. As far as oral medications go, the progestin-only pills tend to be about the same as far as side effects go (at least in my experience). You might try Ovrette, though, as it contains a different progestin than the Jolivette you're taking now.
HTH!
Yes it is a small plastic rod inserted in your arm. Yes you can feel it, and yes I've had side effects. I had mine placed in January. I have been having almost all the side effects listed for it. But, Im still trying to let it adjust and hope it gets better. The bleeding has gone back to normal, at least that I can be thankful for. The procedure itself was simple. They put some topical anesthesia on my right arm, then local, and I couldn't even feel it going in. I had no pain afterwards at the site. Tiny mark from where it was inserted, but it's very light colored and unnoticeable.
I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo.... I don't recommend it. Im still unsure of the Implanon. Good luck with whatever you decide!
How bad are the shots? I'm like super scared of needles, but honestly I'm to the point of just trying it.
I havent had any probs with my Implanon..I was a little b!tchy the first month or so but my face has cleared up DRASTICALLY and so has my moodiness(the moodiness stopped after about 2 months). I have not had a period since I got it put in last October.
The shot is not bad, I will warn you that it is just a GIANT dose of hormone at one time and if you react badly to it, there is nothing you can do about it. My face broke out pretty bad for the first month or two but it slowly cleared up after that...it was HELL on my sex drive..I had no desire to be anywhere near my FI in an intimate way...but I do not regret getting it, it was a great alternative to a daily BCP and I had no headaches which was amazing.
I tend to be very sensitive to medicines so that large of a dose was a little shocking to my system but the Implanon releases such a lose dose over such a long period of time that it doesnt really phase me. You can feel it if you rub that section of your arm but its not painful, I dont even know that its there most of the time.
Not sure if it is out there - but Micronor (sp?) was the first I was one and it was Progestri only - I had to stop taking it because I need estrogen. Ortho-lo gave me months long spotting, I didn't have a single day in 4-5 months where something wasn't coming out of me - but again I need a higher dosage of estrogen or a good high mix.
Look into non hormonal IUDs as well - might solve the whole problem for you.
Here are the currently available progestin-only pills:
I'm not so familiar with the last 2 but, I know that many people take the first 4 listed. They all contain the exact same ingredient so, I'm not sure if switching from one to another is going to alleviate any side effects. From your post, it seems like you are really unhappy with Jolivette.....do you know the reason your Dr. is so insistent on progestin-only?
The lowest dose of estrogen in BCPs is 20 mcg. The following contain 20 mcg: (doesn't include all that are available)
Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo contains 25 mcg so, it's not much more based on estrogen content. HTH!
I was on Ortho Lo for years & had absolutely no problems with it.
