It is SO HOT!!! Any Fan Recommendations?

This is a partial vent and partial request.  I am bored out of my mind, sweating out of my shorts, and not making progress on my paper.

I am stuck at home writing my final paper with a tiny fan facing my direction - better than nothing!  But it is so hot I can't even focus on my work!  We have a window AC unit in the bedroom (or we would never get any sleep on summer nights!) but we can't install an AC in the living room due to the fire escape window.  It seriously gets so hot in here that we become lumps on the couch unable to move or do anything at all.  (It is even hot in the winter!)

Has anyone used a really great plug-in room fan?  I am looking to buy something under $80, one of those vertical modern looking ones, not the traditional round one.  It should be very quiet and help the room feel cooler!  Oh yeah, and my husband wants it to be black, not white.  If you can direct me to any websites, or stores on the UES, I'd appreciate it!  We already checked at our local Best Buy and PC Richards but they didn't have anything.

Thanks!

PS - A rec for you:  Iced peppermind tea is cooling!  Not that I have ice, but I put it in the fridge...

  • Sorry, that you are so hot. I am surpeised that you could not get the fan at BB or at PC Richards. Can u check Home depot or Lowe's? Good luck!

  • I like a plain box fan that can get put into a window or set on the sill. That way, it can be turned to either pull out hot air or suck in cooler air.

H and I have an A/C in the BR during the warmer months but sometimes just use the fan option to get some breeze.  I am dying to install a ceiling fan in there as well.  It's often not so much for cooling but just to get some circulation in there.  I sometimes wake up feeling like the air is just so stagnant.

This summer we definitely need to address some A/C in the LR.  Our old A/C unit isn't wide enough for the window and we need to see about getting a new one.

  • Vornado fans are expensive- but work really well.  I made it through last summer (pregnant) with a window unit in the bedroom and the vornado blowing the air from the bedroom to the living room.  worked fairly well, and better than our cheapo fan.

Question:  Do you do this in the summer?  Summer is so hot and humid I'd rather not let the outside air in... so how does this work when its hot and muggy in the apartment, and hot and humid outside?  Actually today is a good time to exercise your trick... it is nice outside, but my apt is still soo hot from yesterday.... of course none of the outside air is coming inside even with the window open.  I am camped out in front of my bedroom AC today so I can get my work done.  Otherwise, I hate being cramped into a little corner like this!

  • Well I told hubby to buy a fan or I will... I guess that was a threat?  He got off work early today and made it his priority to find a fan online that he could pick up today!  He is on his way to J&R to pick up our new upright fan!  Yay!!  :)

It's really only for spring and fall, but still works pretty well in the milder summer months at night.  I definitely think it works well if you suck out hot air and have a nearby window (with or without a fan) to help get some air flow.  Right now, we have the fan blowing in cooler air and it's fine for now.
