is anyone else freaking out abt the car bomb in times square?
anyone else feel like there's been a surge in crime lately?
last week my hubby told me he doesnt want me walking down any side streets at nite. we live in Hells kitchen.
Re: not to be alarmist, but
I am not freaking out about any specific events yet. There does seem to be a bit more crazy in the air than normal. Certainly, crime is on the rise. The sour economy is definitely a factor. H and I were just talking about this today. He mentioned that white women (and effeminate men) are more often targets. I guess his BFF's GF almost got pickpocketed on the subway this weekend. She slapped the guy's hand and kicked him in the shin. Ha! Go Jennie.
H gives me gentle reminders every now and then about being aware of my surroundings, etc. I try not to let it alter that way I live my life, though.

Not alarmed, probably because when I lived in the city ten years ago for college, things seemed way sketchier. I had more encounters with crazies on subways ect.. of course I was young and doing dumb things like late night subway rides alone. That and I grew up in a sketchy area of Baltimore. But you should always be careful and aware. If you don't like the feel of the person who is walking behind you, stop step to the side and let them pass so you can be behind them. Trust your gut, I didn't once, and that was the one time something bad happened to me.
Of course... I am hardly out at night anymore, so what do I know
I am not too worried either. As far as the car bomb, there are terror attempts on our city all the time - they just catch most of them before we even hear about it. I am actually really comforted to see how quickly the NYPD responded and cleared the area. Before 9/11, I'll bet they would have treated this as an overheating car and not a car bomb, until it exploded.
As far as crime, yes, crime is on the rise. But I grew up here - nothing can compare to the sketchy NYC of the 1980's. So, it's on the rise only because it was abnormally low the last few years. Just be aware, lock your doors, and don't walk around alone on deserted streets and you will be fine!
lots of wise words ladies. i try not to get freaked out but sometimes it's so hard to be a woman in the city... on a daily basis.
anyway, i am interested to see how this times square bomb attempt will play out. the Ahmedzay subway case has taken so long to prosecute it's so anti-climactic now.
