Refusing solids at 9 months...

Does anyone have any experience with this? I know it's not THAT important since she's nursing fabulous but this is out of the blue. All weekend she hasn't really been interested. She ate nectarines yesterday morning ok then refused her second meal. She refused the day before all meals and this morning she didn't want to feed herself banana, which she usually LOVES. I *think* she may be teething, she's a total drool bucket all of a sudden and I can see some white on her bottom gums... Although I've been thinking she might be for about 2 months :) You never know!

Any ideas, did anyone else's LO refuse solids at a certain point?

TIA!

Re: Refusing solids at 9 months...

  • I wouldn't be surprised if it's teething like you said, since you said she's being a drool bucket :) E only pushed food away twice, once right before she barfed down my shirt (some type of stomach bug) and the other, when H dropped her off at his Aunts house to babysit and brought her food is one of those bebecook food pods (5 FULL MEALS) and when he said, "this is what she eats" his aunt took it as "this is what she eats per SITTING" :)  Whoops, needless to say, she got through nearly 3 pods before she pushed it away.  Yeah, E's not that kid they're talking about when they say "Oh, babies just stop eating when their full." :)

  • i would guess teething too but i don't really know as we haven't even started solids yet Stick out tongue
  • Sounds like teething to me...Libby is teething right now and sometimes she even nurses less.  Poor baby.  I think her mouth must really hurt...she's constantly rubbing her gums.  We have had some help from Humphrey's Homeopathic Teething Strips, J picked them up from Walgreen's and they qualify for FSA reimbursement.  They have the same ingredients as the Hylands Teething Tablets but are lactose-free.

Good luck with Bella...I'd keep trying her with food and see if she comes around in a few days.  If it is her teeth you could offer her frozen "momsicles" (BM frozen like a little popsicle) to help them.

Now that's a great idea! She does have a little mesh baggie thing that someone bought us, maybe I can try a frozen piece of fruit in there... we'll see. I'm not pushing it, I try a few bites and if she keeps pursing her lips, I let her be... she's nursing fine so as long as she keeps eating milk, I could careless about the food!

  • I'd chalk it up to teething. Then again, anytime something goes 'wrong,' Vance and I joke that it's teething. She doesn't want to eat? Teething. Doesn't want to nurse? Teething. Crying/fussy? Damn teeth! :)

I've read on the bump about a 'solids strike,' but don't know much about it. You can try asking the ladies over there.  Like you said, solid food at this point is just for practice, so as long as she's nursing well, you're good to go. :)

You might also try finger foods... sometimes Brooke refuses purees and only wants "adult food"

Hope she starts eating again soon!

  • I don't have any personal experience with this as this will be my first child, but a friend of mine experienced a more severe case of child not eating solids. And I don't want to scare you as I know every child is different and it looks yours was at least already eating solids.

My friend waited too long to introduce solids to her daughter (i think it was after 9 months) and at that point her daughter WOULD NOT eat any solids at all. She was in therapy for a little over a year at a well known children's hopsital in Orange County to try to get her to eat solids. She progressed to eating yogurt and baby food after the therapy and she is now almost 3 and only eating bananas, baby foods and other really soft foods. She's never had chicken nuggets, french fries, peanut butter & jelly or any of the foods that 3-year old likes to eat. It's really sad but she's a healthy & happy girl, so thats what matters most.

I put a milk cube into a baby washcloth and tied it off and let Libby gum it the other day...she liked it!  I think it soothed her teeth a bit.

  • Ashton has been refusing to eat lately too (excpet BM). A few days later he started to have a cough....took him to the Dr. and Ashton ended up a having a sore throat....thus the reason for him not eating..,...just an idea that it could be something other than teething.
  • We go to the DR today for her 9 month checkup so I'm going to ask her about. She'll also check her ears again so hopefully she doesn't still have an ear infection after 10 days of antibiotics... poor girl got diarrhea from all that medicine! I know its not constipation at least :)
