Rainy Morning Poll

I am glad its not a rainy "day" poll since forecasters said its only going to rain in the am.

What is the worst job you ever had? Any funny stories to share? (No need to mention the business names)

Re: Rainy Morning Poll

  • oh so many...the busboy job where the owner was a crack addict?  The daycare where the manager could barely manage a complete sentence, and felt free to insult employees for their own education levels?  I can't really pick.

  • Yeah those sound rough.

I worked with a food distribution company when I first got here and they didn't allow us lunch breaks! Tongue Tied

  • i've worked at a lot of annoying jobs... supermarket clerk, cvs, hostess, etc.  i'd have to say the worst is when I was working in a real estate office as an assistant to one of the agents who was going through a divorce.  he was seeing one of the other agents, but his estranged wife thought that I was the one he was seeing (which would have been disgusting)!  she started stalking me and chased me through a parking lot screaming at me.  I quit that day and moved to NY a few weeks later!  it just wasn't worth it.

  • Well, I actually loved this job, but I count it as my worst "job" because with the pay I was getting I might as well have been volunteering!

I worked as a day camp counselor for 5 years.  You got paid according to your age.  When I started I was 15....I worked 8:00am to 5:30 or 6:00pm M-F for.....wait for it......wait for it.....$55 a week!!!!!  WHAT?!?!?!

The thing is, I would get $110 every two weeks, and for a 15 year old that seemed like a lot of money.  Looking back, I can't believe I actually got paid $1.10 an hour. :-)

And it was hard work - I worked with the 3-5 year olds and we were grossly understaffed (gee, I wonder why??).  It is a miracle we never lost a kid!

  • I haven't had too many bad jobs, thankfully. I did work in a food court when I was in college though. I worked in a salad bar section and sometimes helped people out on the registers - they didn't allow us to even sit down, ever. I was constantly exhausted by the end of my shift, but we did get free food, so I can't complain too much!
  • My worst and best job: a research assistant at an STD clinic! I still tell the crazy stories of what went on-- like the patients that would hit on me knowing I knew they had numerous infections! Or, the people whose gender was a mystery! The best job because it was truly eye-opening and I loved the people I worked with. The worst b/c, well, I was surrounded by pictures of infected penises all day long!

  • Ohh, this is tough - I've definitely been blessed with mostly good, decent jobs. I did work for one photographer who had some anger issues and would storm off set (but I guess that's better than throwing a fit ON set).

I worked in several food service jobs - all were so not glamorous, hard work, etc.

I also had a seriously crazy boss at my first "real" full-time job. She was scary, bipolar (really), and I'm so glad I got out of there as fast as I could.

  • I worked at Jamba Juice for, like, a week once.  The people I worked with/for were complete idiots.  I just didn't show up one day. :)

  • I think the worst job was probably my first year of teaching here. I still teach in the same school, but love it now. I moved to NYC and started teaching one week later and saw my room for my 12 special ed kindergarteners was on the 4th floor closet full of furniture. All the teachers were using it as storage and throwing furniture they didn't want in there. To get rid of furniture in NYC schools, you need like an OK from the Chancellor. I seriously had like 30 chairs and 10-15 tables (of only a few were K size.) The kids were in the wrong type of program and half the class had to be moved into special schools. They hit, bit and one was still in diapers. I was chasing kids down the hallway. SInce then, every year is better and easier.

  • My worst job was at this one law firm, where the partners I worked for were really passive-aggressive and honestly I think a little nuts (just two of them, but my office was in between theirs).  I realized it about a week after arriving and stayed for EXACTLY one year, to make it look ok on my resume, the left.  They would blame you for their inability to do stuff when talking to clients, not tell you everything, etc.  I used to gossip with their secretary in the ladies room because it was the only place that they couldn't eavesdrop.
