Residual Effects from the Oil rig

I know that some of you on here have personal experiences with a loss of life from the oil rig, and everyone will have to suffer the ecological effects, but what about the residual effects? Have you seen seafood prices increase? Do you know people who's livelihood are changed? I'm assuming the guy that sells shrimp from his truck on Perkins everyday isn't there.

Re: Residual Effects from the Oil rig

  • I haven't seen anything personally, but it's still early. I think they just closed fishing and shrimping over the weekend. I'm sure in a couple of weeks, we'll know more. Im still hoping that there is some variable they haven't accounted for yet, that will lessen the impact. It's a long shot, but it could happen.
  • from what I hear, seafood prices can be expected to go up - especially shrimp and oysters.  I haven't seen it yet and we're supposed to make seafood gumbo this weekend, so I think later today or tomorrow I'm going to go get some ingredients just in case.

I don't personally know anyone working on the rigs, but a friend of mine analyzes water samples for an environmental firm and she's been working constantly.

Not really related but I saw this decal on the back of a truck the other day and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why anyone would want to have this on their vehicle:  "Oilfield Trash making Oilfield Cash"

    WTF.  Calling yourself trash?  klassy.

  • No, Christen. He's responding to everyone who calls him Oilfield trash. His response, "Call me what you want, but I got that oilfield cash!"

Like Cissy said, I think it will be another few weeks or so before we really see any price increases. Fishing was just shut down and the oil slick is headed toward the coast. The paper this morning said that BP is trying some oil-catch trick and will "suck up" the oil into tankers. Who knows. Either way, it's tragic.

Yep.  My DH works in the oil field and people just assume, "Ohhh, he works offshore?  Hmmm....he must be super-educated and classy."  So it mocks that stereotype while rubbing in the $$$$ they make working out there.  I didn't, however, realize that guys actually used those stickers.  It made me LOL.
