My DH's applying for quite a few jobs in the Greensboro area...there seems to be a lot in in his industry available there. We live in MA and have never lived in NC. Please tell me anything you can about what that area's like: Which towns within a 30 min. drive of Greensboro are family-friendly? Good housing value? Shopping/stuff to do? School system? ...anything. We don't wanna live in a crowded city but don't wanna end up living in a town that's in the middle of nowhere with dusty tumbleweeds rolling by.
There are also jobs in the Raleigh and Charlotte areas, so if you have opinions on those, please throw em in!
Thank you so much. I appreciate the info.
Re: Greensboro Area - Pros and Cons?
The Greensboro area (the "Triad") also includes Winston-Salem and High Point. If I were going to live in the Triad, I'd prefer to live in Greensboro or W-S. I believe that the Triad is smaller than the other two areas that you mentioned, but it's growing and the housing values are good. I have a friend who just moved from MA to Greensboro and was amazed at the housing prices; she said they never would have been able to afford to buy a house in MA but were able to buy a home down here.
I live in the "Triangle" area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), and I really like it here. None of the places that you mentioned are "in the middle of nowhere with dusty tumbleweeds rolling by."
We have lived in Greensboro for a few years now and overall we like it. It is smaller than Raleigh or Charlotte, the population is about 250,000. However it is easy to get to either of those cities as well get to the mountains or the beach. We just went to Asheville for the day yesterday, it is nice being centrally located.
You will probably find the housing to be reasonable. We used to live in the DC metro area and housing is definitely cheaper in Greensboro. You might be able to get to some place that feels like the middle of nowhere 30 minutes outside of town however I would not say that is the norm. I think there would be lots of options if you only want to live within 30 minutes of the city.
I've lived in several places - MS, PA, and TN - before moving to High Point (just outside of Greensboro) about 6 months ago. We absolutely love it!
There are alot of young couples and families in this area. It seems to be a very laid back city with alot to do. There is good shopping at Friendly Center in Greensboro and Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, as well as many cute boutiques throughout downtown Greensboro. The Triad also has an EXCELLENT farmer's market - we have started going there more than we visit the grocery store! There is a strong emphasis on the arts and various museums in Greensboro - lots of galleries, historical places/museums, performing arts, comedy club, etc. Also, Greensboro has alot of activities for children and families - Artquest, Natural Science Center, Greensboro Children's Museum, and so many nice parks!
High Point, Kernersville, and Archdale/Trinity are nice family friendly areas with good schools in K'ville and A-T. As some of the others said, there isn't really an area "in the middle of nowhere" within 30 minutes of Greensboro.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
